About The Position

The Drilling Safety Manager will be responsible for leading and coordinating all safety, health, environmental and training matters. He/She will promote a safe and productive environment by identifying and anticipating concerns and hazards, developing, and enforcing systems, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health regulations. This role involves leading and overseeing health and safety activities across all Hilcorp Lower 48 and Alaska drilling operations.

Requirements

  • Ten (10) years' minimum experience in safety and health specialized in drilling operations.
  • Ability to accurately solve problems and exceptional proficiency in data management.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other departments, officials, and the public.
  • Ability to complete multiple, diverse tasks of differing priorities.
  • Ability to travel to remote locations via large and small planes, helicopter or boat, and ability to don and doff immersion suit.
  • Strong leader, self-starter, excellent communicator with solid interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with specific ability to translate complex information into an organized and presentable manner.
  • Outstanding administrative and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in the use and application of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Associate/Technical Degree from an accredited two-year college, community college, or technical school or any equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the duties of the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Five (5) years’ minimum experience working for Drilling Contractor.
  • Three (3) years’ minimum experience as a people leader.
  • Proficiency in ChemWatch or other SDS management system.
  • Proficiency in VelocityEHS or other incident management system.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year university or college, or related experience.
  • CSHO, COSS, CHST, OHST, ASP, CSP or CIH certification.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and anticipate health and safety concerns by surveying environmental, operational, and occupational risks/conditions/behaviors, and then recommending new equipment, processes, and procedures.
  • Engage routinely to understand upcoming work and risks.
  • Provide advice and coaching on Safety related matters.
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of Alaska Safety Handbook (ASH) requirements, applicable regulations, and field level safety processes and tools.
  • Ensure the HSE tools (leadership engagements, JSA’s, safety conversations, inspections, etc.) are used as designed and provide feedback on the effectiveness of the tools.
  • Lead and coordinate drilling specific emergency response training, coordination, and drills (safety, environmental, well control).
  • Guide and promote safe work performance by developing safety systems to mitigate risk.
  • Deploy safety campaigns, communications, and recognitions.
  • Evaluate and, where needed, develop Hilcorp Safety governance for drilling operations.
  • Develop and maintain Hilcorp owned rig audit/inspection criteria and schedule.
  • Develop and maintain new rig acceptance audit/inspection criteria.
  • Develop and maintain new vendor/equipment audit/inspection criteria.
  • Learn from incidents and injuries through investigations and sharing of discoveries and lessons from incidents.
  • Guide the investigation process and provide coaching and guidance to Safety Specialist, contractors, and Drilling team.
  • Actively participate in determination of severity with focus on SIF/SIFP determination and meaningful corrective actions.
  • Assure all incidents/actions are closed out by providing line of site to overdue incidents/actions and being a resource to help getting incidents/actions closed.
  • Support the development of the lessons learned communications.
  • Participate in the development of training materials and deliver face-to-face training, as needed.
  • Coach, mentor, and supervise Field Safety Specialists, to include setting expectations, overseeing activities, assigning responsibilities, and evaluating the effectiveness of their work.
  • Provide visible leadership engagement to ensure risks are managed effectively.
  • Conduct employee performance evaluations and regularly hold individual development sessions.
  • Manage work, vacation and training schedules.
  • Organize, schedule and lead routine team meetings.
  • Maintain presence in field (2 trips/month).
  • Understand how current operating environment, changes, and/or decisions impact internal clients, partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Develop regular cadence of interaction with Drilling Managers and their teams.
  • Actively seek Drilling Team input while maintaining regular communication with Field Safety Specialists on how best to ensure that programs are aligned with safety management system objectives and Drilling Team goals.
  • Communicate and collaborate with Drilling Managers and their teams on Incident Investigation findings and mitigations as well as how to communicate same.
  • Support interactions with Drilling Contractors through regular meetings, audits and other requests or support as required.
  • Bridge contractor safety systems and practices with Hilcorp’s.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local safety regulations by studying existing law, anticipating future legislation, interpreting standards, enforcing adherence to regulations, and advising management on proactive efforts.
  • Define and communicate key safety performance metrics influencing safety performance and correlating to business performance goals, industry performance, and company targets.
  • Assist in safety incident reporting, classification, and communications, adeptly taking a lead role or delegating to safety team as best suits the scenario.
  • Provide visible leadership engagement to ensure we are managing risk.
  • Support Hilcorp Safety Team management in relationships, inquiries, interpretations, and responses to external inquiries.
  • Work across asset team boundaries to communicate/understand impacts to adjacent programs and processes and identify opportunities for common solutions or tools to address safety and health concerns.
  • Contribute to team discussions, meetings, and lessons learned.
  • Support safety related initiatives and projects.
  • Anticipate safety needs and offer mitigations or solutions.
  • Develop and report to leadership on matters related to Safety and Training.
  • Complete tasks assigned by Safety Director.
  • Ability to be available 24 hours per day (on call for questions, emergencies, etc.).
  • Maintain employee confidence and protect drilling operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Ability to solve problems accurately and exceptional proficiency in data management.
  • Maintain technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional associations.
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Perform all other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor or manager.
