We will leverage chaotic dynamical systems to design computer validation tests. Chaotic dynamical systems have the property that small perturbations may lead to arbitrarily large deviations in the outcome, making such perturbations easily identifiable. The difficulty is in how to discern the effect of “regular” errors that we should anticipate (such as roundoff errors, algebraic errors, discretization errors) from those we truly want to detect (such as hardware defects, software bugs, and random bit-flips that aren’t caught), hence this 10-week study.
