About The Position

The Dockmaster is a front-line, member-facing position responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and daily oversight of the Club's waterfront, docks, and Club-owned fleet. Reporting to the Harbormaster and Facilities Director, this role supports all waterfront activities, adult and junior sailing programs, and ensures a safe, organized, and welcoming harbor environment. A friendly, professional demeanor is essential, as the Dockmaster interacts daily with members and serves as a primary point of contact for waterfront activities.

Requirements

  • Strong boating and seamanship experience required.
  • Working knowledge of small boat engines, marine systems, and rigging.
  • New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate required.
  • Ability to remain calm and decisive in changing weather and water conditions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a member-service mindset.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and handle boating equipment and gear.
  • Comfort working on docks, boats, and in/on the water.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during special events as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in waterfront, marina, or sailing program operations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee dock and harbor operations with a focus on safety, organization, and member experience.
  • Assist members with boat movements, docking, launching, hauling, and general waterfront needs.
  • Enforce dock rules and safety policies clearly, calmly, and consistently.
  • Maintain clean, orderly, and well-functioning docks, floats, and waterfront equipment.
  • Oversee the maintenance, readiness, and repair of the Club-owned powerboat and sailboat fleet.
  • Conduct regular vessel inspections and proactively identify maintenance or repair needs.
  • Perform or coordinate basic engine work, rigging adjustments, fueling, and systems troubleshooting.
  • Support adult and junior sailing programs, regattas, races, and special waterfront events.
  • Assist with on-water supervision, rescues, towing, and safety response as needed.
  • Supervise and mentor seasonal dock staff, promoting professionalism, seamanship, and safety awareness.
  • Collaborate with the Harbormaster, Facilities team, Sailing staff, and other Club departments.
  • Assist with special projects and perform additional duties as assigned.
