About The Position

The Senior Vocational Instructor provides high-level instruction and oversight of training pathways, including Comprehensive Construction, Culinary Arts, and Workforce Readiness. As a senior member of the instruction team, this role focuses on advancing technical skills through industry-standard trades training. The Senior Instructor plays a key role in program growth by piloting new vocational curricula and providing essential administrative support to the unit supervisor. Work is performed in an institutional setting with constant exposure to and interaction with incarcerated individual’s residents. Incumbents must be able to operate shop machinery, lift, and carry moderately heavy equipment, and supervise correctional facility inmates.

Requirements

  • Candidates must demonstrate senior-level expertise in the skilled trades, specifically welding.
  • The ability to lead structured educational programs, pilot new initiatives, and manage a complex shop environment is required.
  • Computer application competency is mandatory for managing training records and navigating the Learning Management System.
  • Certified Global Career Development Facilitator, Certified Career Services Professional, Skilled Trades Certification, OR Vermont Teaching Endorsement AND two (2) or more years of experience in workforce development.
  • Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.
  • Candidates who have any felony conviction record or who, within the past five (5) years, have been placed under supervision or sanctioned for a misdemeanor conviction must receive a waiver from the Commissioner of Corrections in order to be considered for employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experienced Vocational instructor with a proven track record, certified in OSHA and have a trade experience such as welding, automotive, plumbing or electrical.

Responsibilities

  • Leads hands-on instruction and shop operations, ensuring participants progress toward industry-recognized certifications.
  • Pilots and implements new vocational programs to meet evolving workforce demands and adapts established curricula into daily lesson plans.
  • Assists supervisor with administrative tasks, reporting, and operational oversight of the instructional unit.
  • Proctors certification exams and maintains meticulous records of participant attendance, competency checklists, and vocational progress via the LMS.
  • Maintains a secure learning environment through constant supervision and strict, rigorous accountability of all tools and high-hazard shop equipment.
  • Collaborates with correctional staff and community partners and models professional work ethics and "soft skills" critical for successful reentry.
