About The Position

The incumbents may be requested to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated in this position description. Program Development and Implementation Responsibilities (35%) Plans, oversees, and administers the programs and activities that support the objectives of the Music and Arts department; initiates and implements new programs and activities with the approval of the Divisional Music and Arts Director that support and realize the objectives of the ministry-centered focus of the department. Explores innovative models of creative worship in areas outside of traditional Salvation Army instrumental and vocal music in an effort to include a larger percentage of Salvation Army congregations including dramas, dance, visual arts, and other artforms. Ensures the evaluation of programs on a continual basis and ensures that programs/activities respond to the participant’s needs and the department’s mission. Serves as creative and spiritual leader for multiple divisional music and creative arts ensembles; instructs and directs ensemble leadership; manages creative art equipment. During all rehearsals, serves as a creative arts director/guide by performing and teaching dance, acting, or other music and arts skills; using creativity and educational research as an integral part of the position, determines the most effective way to teach creative arts to participants. Plans and schedules rehearsals and performances; creates lesson plans for rehearsals; studies scripts, and choreography; develops interpretations and style. Choreographs or composes dances or scripts as requested for special events and activities; adjust other scripts or dances to adapt them to a particular group, or to create a particular musical style. Provides creative arts curriculum for individual and group participants at the corps and divisional level. Program Support Responsibilities (35%) Develops strategies to generate program participation; identifies and cultivates program participants; identifies and trains leaders at Corps to ensure continued program development and growth. Maintains a positive and encouraging learning environment that facilitates the achievement of the program outcomes. Ensures that Salvationists of the North and South Carolina Division are encouraged to participate in a variety of programs and activities provided by the department and receive instruction and constructive feedback to develop skills in the program area(s). Plans devotions and regularly prays with participants. Plans and organizes music and arts presentations, productions, and video resources under the direction of the Divisional Music and Arts Director, with the Youth and Music & Arts Department. Uses video equipment and video editing software to produce educational resources, devotional series, and performance videos for the Music Department. Travels to meet the program needs of the department and the Division. Creates tech briefs, oversees the tech team, and acts as the event producer for all music department sponsored events. Summer Conservatory (25%) Serves as administrative staff for the music conservatory portion of Summer Camp; supervises Camp Music staff to ensure the safety and proper participation of campers; lives at Camp Walter Johnson for six to eight weeks annually during Summer Camp. Instructs participants individually and in groups on proper acting or dancing or other music and arts disciplines; serves as director or producer of conservatory programs and events. Administrative Responsibilities (5%) Oversees proper record keeping and reporting of creative arts programming including activities and events conducted, breakdowns participation figures, notable achievements, and other relevant issues. Complete administrative and support assignments as assigned by the Divisional Music and Arts Director. Maintains annual inventory check on divisional costumes and props. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of The Salvation Army.
  • Knowledge of The Salvation Army’s mission, philosophy, culture, and protocol
  • Skills in creative arts performance.
  • Ability to serve as an example of Salvationism and to demonstrate interest in the spiritual well-being of all youth and adult musicians and creatives in divisional and corps programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement effective artistic programs.
  • Knowledge of effective leadership skills, including negotiation, problem solving, and decision making.
  • Functional knowledge of principles, research, and practices of music and arts education.
  • Ability to organize, teach, and conduct music and arts groups of all ages and levels.
  • Ability to develop and implement effective programs and activities attractive to youth and in alignment with the mission of The Salvation Army.
  • A Salvationist in good standing with The Salvation Army and Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Music, Music Education, Theater, Performance Art or a related field
  • Two years practical experience in music and arts programming or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Valid State Driver’s License
