About The Position

Under limited supervision, serves as a lead engineer performing engineering assignments. Provides engineering assistance developing project plans, designs, or traffic engineering studies and other related documents, field experience with traffic signals and ITS hardware, cost estimates and other engineering technical reports for transportation projects. Provides training, support and knowledge sharing to other engineers. JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES: Manages the Operations and/or Access Management Units of the District Traffic Section. These units are primarily responsible for conducting District-wide assignments that include but are not limited to traffic engineering studies, signal timing/phasing studies, computerized monitoring and control of signal operation and timing, safety enhancement reviews, citizen complaint investigations, GDOT construction plan review, and speed zone/radar ordinance coordination. Reviews, approves and issues driveway/special encroachment permits. Reviews and approves traffic control plans and advises District Construction, Maintenance, and other Traffic Operations personnel on proper technique and placement. Coordinates with local officials and law enforcement agencies on all safety and efficiency-related problems and complaints. Responds to and represents the Department in emergency situations. Provides expert-level guidance on traffic operations issues to internal and external customers. Represents Traffic Operations at public meetings, field plan reviews, and other milestone or key meetings. Please note, this position may be filled at the lower level = CE-4

Requirements

  • Georgia PE License OR the ability to obtain the GA PE License within six months of hire date.
  • Advanced-level working knowledge of traffic engineering principles, methods, policies and procedures.
  • Advanced-level engineering experience in design, utilities, construction, or maintenance.
  • Experience as a lead worker, engineer, or project manager within a work unit or project team.
  • Demonstrated excellent leadership skills, with experience motivating and guiding others toward accomplishment of office/Department goals.
  • Demonstrated experience developing team spirit and commitment to shared goals.
  • Demonstrated experience in reading and interpreting pertinent information on engineering plans, maps, and graphs quickly and accurately.
  • Possesses competency in interpreting, analyzing, and summarizing information for the purpose of writing technical reports related to transportation engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively organize work/projects and establish objectives to achieve priorities.

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or civil engineering technology and Two years of related experience and a Professional Engineer (PE) License. OR Professional Engineer (PE) License with Two years of related experience.
  • Foreign degrees require a completed Equivalency Evaluation by NCEES along with the official transcript.

Nice To Haves

  • Thorough knowledge of traffic operational principles, methods, policies and procedures in two or more of the following areas: traffic engineering, signal timing/phasing, monitoring and control of signal operation and timing, safety enhancement, citizen complaint investigations, speed zone/radar ordinance coordination, and/or access management, field engineering or innovative design
  • Previous experience leading a team, managing projects, or supervising employees directly or indirectly.
  • Demonstrate ability to act as field engineer to layout safety and/or operational enhancements/improvements.
  • Demonstrate ability to respond to emergency situations involving traffic impacts to the traveling public, including establishment of detours and to direct other work units on execution of detour plans.
  • Demonstrate ability to guide maintenance in the proper implementation of traffic related improvements.
  • Demonstrate ability in the execution of field decisions based on a best fit scenario.
