About The Position

District Sign Technician I: Performs entry-level transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records of signs and materials and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and standard practices and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor. District Sign Technician II: Performs skilled transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records, ordering of signs and materials, and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid Commercial Class "A" Driver License (CDL) at time of application with an N Endorsement, and with no restrictions - This position requires you to drive a state vehicle for TxDOT.
  • District Sign Technician I requires NONE of experience
  • District Sign Technician II requires 1 YEAR Sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance-related work as required; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions.
  • Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
  • Issues signs to maintenance sections/transportation crews; uses tools and equipment and moves signs and related materials.
  • Measures and calculates amount of materials needed.
  • Mixes and places concrete for sign support foundations; moves cement bags and other items related to these duties.
  • Operates a boom and bucket truck and/or specialized sign truck to install roadway signs.
  • Operates radios.
  • Performs and maintains inventory of signs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on sign truck.
  • Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other departmental guidance.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
  • Orders supplies and materials from district shop.
  • Orders signs from the regional sign shop.
  • Conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping, and retroreflective pavement markers (RPMs).
  • Inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs.
