About The Position

As a Distinguished Engineer on our AI Security team, you will be a hands-on technical leader helping shape how we build, secure, and scale AI systems across the company. You will review and evolve our AI security standards, assess internal AI projects, and apply your deep technical background and threat landscape awareness to drive meaningful improvements to our security posture. This role requires a unique blend of security expertise, systems thinking, software engineering experience, and strong cross-functional communication. You will work closely with engineering teams across domains and serve as a force multiplier for security and safe AI development. About the team: The AI Security Team within the Information Security organization specializes in integrating cybersecurity, data science, and governance. Their dual focus includes leveraging AI to enhance organizational protection and securing AI systems themselves. This team designs and implements advanced security architectures, ensuring robust infrastructure and application security aligned with industry standards. They collaborate across domains to develop scalable, resilient solutions that address evolving security challenges. By combining expertise in systems engineering, security technology, and infrastructure management, the team drives innovation and maintains the integrity of critical systems supporting Walmart’s business objectives.

Requirements

  • Developer background with strong Python programming skills.
  • Experience in CI/CD and MLOps, including tools like Concord, Looper (WCNP is a bonus).
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills — able to clearly explain technical ideas, create compelling documentation, and lead engineering discussions.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Git repositories and version control best practices.
  • Operational experience with hyperscale cloud platforms, particularly Azure and Google Cloud.
  • Comfortable in Linux environments and familiar with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, ARM templates, or Ansible).
  • Understanding of workflow and rules engines and their application in security or policy enforcement.
  • Demonstrated use of AI-assisted tools to boost engineering productivity and a strong grasp of Generative AI technologies and risks.
  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, information systems, cybersecurity, or related area and 6years’ experience in systems and infrastructure engineering or related area at a technology, retail, or data-driven company.
  • Option 2: 8 years’ experience in systems and infrastructure engineering or related area at a technology, retail, or data-driven company.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience integrating security into ML pipelines and model deployment workflows.
  • Familiarity with AI risk management frameworks (e.g., NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001).
  • Prior contributions to open-source, internal frameworks, or cross-org security initiatives.
  • Experience with threat modeling for ML systems or red teaming AI

Responsibilities

  • Review internal AI projects, pipelines, and architectures for security gaps, and drive mitigations.
  • Analyze emerging global threats and risks related to AI, and update our security policies, playbooks, and standards accordingly.
  • Define and refine scalable security processes and controls for AI and ML systems across their lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with engineers and product teams to implement secure-by-default patterns in CI/CD and MLOps workflows.
  • Build reference implementations and prototypes to validate security controls in real-world AI environments.
  • Write clear technical documentation, design diagrams, and decision records for broad consumption across engineering teams.
  • Act as a mentor and trusted advisor on secure engineering and AI safety topics.

  • The annual salary range for this position is $130,000.00 - $260,000.00
  • Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses.
