About The Position

What you'll do: As a Distinguished Software Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in architecting and delivering scalable, intelligent platform solutions that enable innovation across our business. You will drive the technical vision and execution of enterprise-grade platforms while also leading the integration of advanced AI/ML and agentic capabilities to power next-generation user experiences. This role demands a rare blend of deep technical expertise, hands-on engineering excellence, and strategic leadership. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams-engineering, product, UX, data science, and business-to build resilient systems that are performant, secure, observable, and AI-ready. Your work will directly impact how we serve millions of customers and associates at Walmart and deliver measurable value at scale.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of software engineering experience, including platform and AI/ML system design
  • Proven leadership delivering large-scale distributed systems and enterprise platforms
  • Strong hands-on expertise in:
  • Java, Scala, Spring Boot
  • React, React Native (for full-stack collaboration)
  • Kafka, message queues, event-driven architecture
  • Cloud platforms: Azure, GCP, or AWS
  • CI/CD, observability, containerization (Docker), orchestration (Kubernetes)
  • Proficiency with:
  • AI/ML tools: LLMs, vector search, agent-based architectures, open-source AI frameworks
  • Data engineering: schema design, pipelines, batch/stream processing
  • Deep understanding of system design, API governance, and security
  • Ability to influence technical vision, platform standards, and engineering best practices
  • Strong communication and leadership presence to align across engineering and business teams
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 6 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
  • 8 years' experience in software engineering or related area.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Security Risk Management Platform Architecture & Delivery
  • Architect cloud-native, scalable platforms and backend systems using technologies such as Java, Scala, Kafka, and Spring Boot.
  • Engineer AI-Ready Systems
  • Design and evolve platforms that enable integration of agentic systems, LLMs, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines.
  • Build Developer Productivity Tools
  • Implement reusable frameworks, APIs, and services to accelerate development, enforce engineering best practices, and abstract AI/ML complexity.
  • Drive Innovation in Agentic AI
  • Design and deploy AI-enhanced experiences and intelligent automation agents using frameworks like LangChain, LangGraph, vector databases (e.g., FAISS/Milvus), and transformer-based models (e.g., GPT, BERT).
  • Mentor & Inspire
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers across the organization; foster a culture of innovation, learning, and accountability.
  • Ensure Operational Excellence
  • Lead performance optimization, production readiness, CI/CD, observability (Grafana, ELK, etc.), and secure deployment on cloud platforms (Azure, GCP, AWS).
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with Product, UX, MLOps, and Data Science to shape roadmap decisions, influence technical direction, and deliver enterprise-wide capabilities.
