About The Position

Job Summary RISD’s Department of Public Safety seeks a full-time Dispatcher to join their team. This position serves as the first point of contact by phone and in-person for RISD community members reporting emergencies, security issues, large scale incidents, illness or injury. The Dispatcher will assess, prioritize and dispatch emergency responders, retrieving and relaying information in real time as needed. They will accurately document information for reports, records and daily logs, and greet and perform receptionist duties for walk-in community members at the Dispatch Center. They will also provide emergency communications with police, fire and EMS as needed, and monitor life, safety and access systems, and cameras. The Dispatcher is a resource for RISD community members, providing information and problem solving as issues arise. Essential Functions: Receives, screens, and takes appropriate action on all emergency service calls to the Department of Public Safety including requests for public safety officers, fire, and medical calls; determines nature and location of emergency, determines priority, dispatches emergency responders as necessary in accordance with established department policies and procedures; relays pertinent information to responders. Dispatch, monitor and receive emergency and non-emergency calls over radio systems and channels for RISD, Providence Police and Fire Departments, Brown University and others as assigned. Provides detailed call information to first responders as needed; maintains status and awareness of unit locations; monitors message traffic and relays broadcasts and communicates orders as assigned, ensuring receipt. Enters emergency assistance call information into the computer-aided dispatch (CAD system); determines location of call; inputs, modifies, confirms and validates information into the system; enters data for reports, records, and daily logs, processes forms and record files; queries system databases as requested; maintains records and files in accordance with established standards. Greets and performs receptionist duties for walk-in community members at the Dispatch Center, providing information, directions, other resources and answering questions. Serves as first point of contact for those requesting public safety services. Using camera systems, monitor, retrieve information and report to responding officers in real time for emergency or non-emergency incidents and investigations. Using access control systems, monitor, control access, retrieve information and report to responding officers in emergency or non-emergency situations. Provides card system update services and information. Monitor life safety alarm systems, and emergency blue phone kiosks dispatching officers for response as needed while ensuring accurate and timely reporting, communicating with police, fire and EMS departments response, updating as needed. Provide dispatch services for RISDRides and other non-emergency transports, providing information, verification, problem solving with outside vendor and/or employees and faculty and students as needed. Maintains logs and reporting of rides as requested. Responsible for inventory of vehicle and room keys, key cards. Ensuring community members are properly identified before issuing items. Logs, tracks and reports use of keys and vehicles.

Requirements

  • Related security and dispatch work experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to respond to situations of varying intensity swiftly and with good judgment.
  • Ability to quickly assess, prioritize and re-prioritize concurrent requests.
  • Ability to multi-task in addressing multiple requests simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with computers and related software programs.
  • High School diploma and/or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
