The Director, Transplant Services is responsible for the direction and management of the operational, financial, programmatic and personnel activities for Transplant Services under the direction of the Chief of Transplant Services and the Dir, Surgery. This position is responsible for directing the day-to-day operations of all Transplant Services activities, personnel and faculty management, budgeting, cost control, contract review, marketing and planning. The Director works closely with a variety of entities, coordinating the activities of the service line across the enterprise and represents the interests of Transplant at all times. The Director plays a leading role in five critical areas: 1) transplant operations management, 2) financial management, 3) program development and marketing, 4) coordination and liaison, and 5) strategic and business planning.

Requirements

Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in Healthcare Administration or related field.
Minimum of five (5) to eight (8) years relevant experience in the management and administration of a large academic unit, preferably one with multiple missions that require the integration of clinical care with a high level of scholarly performance.
Broad knowledge of modern health care administration, principles and practices within a managed care environment and/or an academic medical center.
In-depth knowledge of managerial accounting for health care organizations and of hospital and clinical operations.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision and administration as applied to the management and direction of personnel within areas of accountability.
Knowledge of principles and techniques used in negotiation as applied to service contracts and equipment purchasing.
Effective organizational, planning, controlling scheduling and project management abilities.
The successful candidate will be personally effective and indicate a past history of success in achieving organizational effectiveness.
Experience in financial and programmatic presentations. Strong interpersonal skills to include the ability to negotiate, resolve conflicts and build teams.
Ability to function independently and have creativity and vision as well as the ability to deal with multiple, simultaneous projects.

Responsibilities

All operations and services will be continually assessed for opportunities for improvement. Issues will be addressed using techniques of systems analysis and project management to achieve desired outcomes. The Director will actively participate in all QA/PI committee meetings and activities in collaboration with the department Chief, physicians and appropriate Medical Center staff.
Responsible for patient flow, scheduling, customer service assessment and action, service to managed care organizations and contract oversight, and coordination of clinical research with service line operations.
Participates regularly and proactively in the identification and resolution of existing system wide issues as they arise, including but not limited to faculty compensation and productivity, resource allocation in clinical settings, capital and operating budget development, establishment of models for management of patient care, implementation and communication of new endeavors and status changes in a fast paced environment.
Provides support to all transplant outreach activities. Outreach efforts for the delivery of clinical services may include functioning as the administrative contact for members of the physician's liaison program, coordinating public relations efforts for Transplant Services.
Responsible for all space and facilities planning, whether office, administrative, educational, clinical or basic research, renovations and facilities management.
Oversees technical and clerical staffing, salaries and scheduling as well as internal and external physician relations. Patient Experience
The Director is responsible for achieving the highest levels of efficiencies and for patient flow, scheduling, and service, as well as the assessment of, and actions necessary to insure, excellent patient and family experiences. Regulatory Compliance
In collaboration with appropriate Medical Center personnel and the Chief of Transplant Services, the Director ensures the program is at all times compliant with all applicable regulations e.g., state law, CMS Transplant Conditions of Participation, UNOS Bylaws and policies and procedures, CDC requirements and Joint Commission standards of accreditation. Financial Management
Possess the ability to independently gather other important information and integrate this data into well-formulated policy recommendations with appropriate alternatives and cost benefit analysis. Program Management
Plays a primary role in the assessment of programmatic needs and preparation and implementation of program activities and initiatives under the direction of the Medical Director and Senior Vice President of Operations.
Identifies and develops new opportunities to improve programs, seeking out and addressing patients', providers' and others unmet needs. This includes strategic planning, and project and change management necessary for the transition from a conventional clinical organization to a service line-type format.
Works with the Department of Surgery's administrative staff and Hospital staff to develop, implement and maintain information systems that optimally reflect the clinical, research, education and other programmatic needs of the Transplant Services.
Participates with appropriate sectional committees and groups regarding the allocation and renovation of clinical, research and administrative physical space according to programmatic needs and financial resources.
Participates in faculty and staff recruitment by assessing needs for specific skills, developing hiring proposals and presentations to appropriate committees and preparing requests for start-up funding or salary lines as needed.
Resource for benchmarking the best practices both in the clinical and academic arenas and is expected to be in contact with outside individuals and other academic centers to accomplish this goal.
The Director provides support to all transplant outreach activities and represents the Transplant Services in its relationships with various entities and organizations as appropriate. Outreach efforts for the delivery of clinical services may include functioning as the administrative contact for physicians, creating a defined set of relationship-building activities for internal and external physicians, other care providers, and community organizations. The Director will coordinate marketing and public relations efforts for Transplant Services in collaboration with Medical Center personnel. Strategic and Business Planning
Expected to identify and articulate common goals and opportunities, and develop programmatic plans to achieve them.
This includes writing and presenting proposals, negotiating their acceptance, identifying appropriate action items, creating financial analyses and justifying budgets, and selecting and measuring appropriate metrics for success.
Planning will involve research; teaching and clinical patient care and appropriate strategies may be both programmatic and financial. Educator/Research Facilitator
Contributes to the establishment of a learning environment, which is conducive to the provision of educational and research experiences to students, residents, interns, faculty, fellows and technical, clerical, nursing and supervisory support staff.
Plans and provides training and development opportunities for management/supervisory staff.
Provides opportunities for the credentialing and continued education and development of support staff.
Contributes to the institutional knowledge of the latest trends, practices and state-of-the-art technology as applicable to assigned areas of responsibility.
Facilitates performance of clinical and basic science research endeavors within Transplant. Physical Requirements
Ability to lift up to 10 pounds maximum and occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as files, supplies and other office items.
