JOB DESCRIPTION: Directs the establishment of objectives, the development of long-range and strategic plans, the identification of strengths and weaknesses and business opportunities for the corporation or major business unit. Identifies internal and external strategic issues that could affect the growth and profitability of the business unit. (It should be understood that this is not intended to be a detailed nor comprehensive description of any individual employee's job content. Managers set the specific duties and responsibilities for each employee.) SCOPE: Directs the establishment of objectives, the development of long-range and strategic plans and the identification of strengths and weaknesses and business opportunities. May conduct special studies for top management in areas such as operational effectiveness, capacity utilization, operating cost containment, etc. May be responsible for the overall operation, resource allocation, or the integration of assigned functions with other organizational segments. May be responsible for merger/acquisition activity. Makes recommendations as to the impact on the corporation's or business unit's profitability. PROBLEM COMPLEXITY: Works on abstract problems across functional areas of business. Identifies and evaluates fundamental problems for major functional areas through assessment of intangible variables. IMPACT: Erroneous decisions will have a long-term effect on company or business unit success. LIAISON: Interacts internally and externally with executive-level management requiring negotiation of extremely difficult matters to influence policy making. FREEDOM TO ACT: LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT: Advises with respect to the activities of one or more functional areas, divisions, product groups, etc. through senior managers with overall responsibility for the direction of those assigned areas. KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS AND ABILITY: Significant related experience and training in the areas of strategic planning. Must possess analytical, presentation, and problem-solving skills; the ability to gain internal support; to operate independently without supervision or feedback; and the ability to establish a solid working relationship with technical staff, managers, and peers.
