Role summary: The Director, Software Engineering leads the execution and delivery of complex software and AI/ML systems, ensuring scalability, reliability, and alignment with strategic objectives. About the team: The team leads Walmart’s talent acquisition technology, supporting the hiring process for 2.4 million associates across all levels. They design and manage scalable software solutions that enable recruitment from front-line to executive roles. With expertise in AI agents, project and stakeholder management, cloud financial management, and DevOps architecture, the team drives innovation and operational excellence. Collaborating cross-functionally, they deliver reliable, efficient, and secure systems aligned with business goals. Focused on continuous improvement, the team upholds accountability, technical excellence, and strategic impact within Walmart’s global hiring ecosystem.

Requirements

  • Proven leadership in managing complex software engineering projects and cross-functional teams.
  • Expertise in software development lifecycle, including architecture, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Strong proficiency in DevOps practices, cloud cost optimization, and system reliability management.
  • Experience integrating AI/ML technologies and agentic systems using languages such as Python, Java, Rust, or Dart.
  • Skilled in stakeholder management, project planning, and aligning technology roadmaps with business objectives.
  • Ability to drive continuous improvement, innovation, and operational excellence in engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated capacity for mentoring, talent development, and succession planning.
  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Option 2: 8 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
  • 3 years' supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead execution of complex software, data, and AI/ML systems ensuring reliability, scalability, and integration across platforms.
  • Oversee full software development lifecycle, championing DevOps practices, observability, and cloud cost optimization.
  • Collaborate with product and data teams to deliver AI-enabled features and autonomous agentic systems.
  • Manage engineering capacity, backlog prioritization, and cross-team dependencies to align with strategic roadmaps and milestones.
  • Build and mentor high-performing teams, fostering professional growth and sustaining talent pipelines.
  • Drive continuous improvement by implementing innovative solutions and optimizing operational efficiency.
  • Ensure technical quality, stakeholder alignment, and adherence to business objectives throughout project delivery.
