General Summary: This role integrates risk, resilience, and performance disciplines, developing standards and procedures through roadmaps, prioritization, and implementation of initiatives. The incumbent may have direct or indirect management responsibility for professional staff and leads the direction, management, and implementation of initiatives including operational, financial, and performance analyses. The Director is comfortable with ambiguity, leads in a fast-paced and fluid environment, and demonstrates flexibility, diplomacy, and persistence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree or professional certification preferred (e.g., CPA, CFA, CMCE, CRMP, DRCE, ORCE, CISSP, ASA, FSA).
  • 8+ years of related experience, including program and/or team management.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of risk management, resilience, and performance disciplines at both practical and policy levels.
  • Ability to frame issues, options, and solutions using operational, financial, and performance data.
  • Experience navigating change positively with individuals and teams.
  • Proven ability to work with all corporate levels, including senior management and external stakeholders.
  • Strong conflict resolution, facilitation, and conceptual thinking skills.
  • Expert-level knowledge of risk, resilience, and performance management tools and software.
  • Advanced proficiency in analyzing workflows and process models across business domains.
  • Collaborative, energetic contributor and leader with a proactive mindset.
  • Strong analytical, planning, and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence strategic direction of ERM and EPM programs.
  • Expert knowledge of project and program management disciplines, including Agile methodologies.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Strong written, verbal communication, and training skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead risk, resilience, and performance oversight and advisory consultation across business functions to identify risks requiring mitigation and performance gaps requiring improvement.
  • Directly or indirectly lead a team responsible for reporting, analysis, and day-to-day activities including operational, quantitative, GAAP/statutory accounting, general ledger processes, and performance reporting.
  • Develop and enhance integrated ERM and EPM programs in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to build bench strength and core competencies across the organization.
  • Model positive change management, guiding teams through new operating models and methodologies.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of Unum Group’s operational, financial, and performance functions, processes, and systems.
  • Promote program visibility and maintain productive cross-functional partnerships across the enterprise.
  • Act as a strategic consultant providing financial, operational, and performance support to business areas.
  • Govern and maintain compliance with corporate policies, procedures, controls, and external regulatory requirements.
  • Present reporting and analysis to senior management, identifying trends and recommending actions.
  • Monitor industry trends, regulatory changes, and emerging risks to assess business impacts.
  • Lead or support annual risk and resilience planning, including Business Impact Analysis (BIA) and performance forecasting.
  • Provide crisis/incident response leadership aligned with corporate responsibilities.
  • Design and facilitate scenario analysis, assessments, training, and exercises; oversee issue tracking and resolution.
  • Monitor risk, resilience, and performance indicators to identify critical success factors and drive improvement.
  • Promote a risk-aware and performance-driven culture through educational campaigns and leadership engagement.
  • Champion front-line risk ownership by empowering business units to identify, assess, and manage risks within their operations, ensuring alignment with enterprise risk appetite and performance goals.
  • Ensure a strong, diverse talent and leadership pipeline to meet aggressive business objectives.
  • Lead and participate in review boards, committees, and working groups for risk, resilience, and performance.
  • Perform managerial, operational, and administrative tasks in a timely fashion.
  • Provide after-hours support as needed.
  • Travel may be required.
