About The Position

Madrigal Pharmaceuticals is seeking a results-oriented Director of Project Management to oversee the design, implementation, and operation of R&D program management tools & technology to enable efficient and effective development of work package templates, integrated project plans, program/study dashboards, and portfolio analytics. Covering the full product lifecycle – from early development to post-marketing requirements – the Director will partner closely with program/project managers and clinical/functional leaders to build and maintain integrated project plans and ensure portfolio wide integration and visibility. The Director will also have the opportunity to project manage non-clinical and early-stage clinical programs and studies. Reporting to the Vice President of Project and Portfolio Management (PPM), this role will be instrumental in driving operational excellence and supporting the success of Madrigal’s development programs.

Requirements

  • Expertise in the development and implementation of foundational program management office tools, technology, and infrastructure
  • Mastery of project management and dashboarding software (e.g. SmartSheet, Power BI, etc.)
  • Demonstrated success in managing complex, cross-functional drug development program teams
  • Understanding of drug development process from discovery through commercialization
  • Strong ability to synthesize, distill, and succinctly communicate strategy, plan, and status for multiple complex, cross-functional initiatives to all audiences
  • Experience in operating model, governance, and process design and implementation within R&D environments
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, with a track record of leading and influencing cross-functional teams
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated and able to multi-task within a fast-paced environment
  • Comfortable with and skilled at navigating ambiguity
  • Ability to lead and influence without authority
  • Bachelor’s degree in scientific or relevant business discipline required
  • 12+ years of relevant experience including a minimum 10 years project management experience

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in both small biotech and larger pharmaceutical company environments preferred
  • Experience in metabolic or rare disease therapeutic areas preferred
  • Applicable advanced degree (e.g. MA, MBA, PhD, MD) a plus

Responsibilities

  • Build Foundational Capabilities: Lead design, implementation, and operation of fit-for-purpose tools and technology to enable best-in-class project management of a growing, multi-asset portfolio
  • Enable Project Planning: Support development and maintenance of detailed integrated project plans for full portfolio of R&D programs, studies, and/or projects, ensuring cross-enterprise alignment
  • Mentor and Guide Teams: Serve as a trusted thought partner to program, study, and project teams, providing hands-on coaching, structure, and accountability within the project management disciple
  • Ensure Project Delivery: Manage project timelines, deliverables, and budgets, proactively identifying and resolving risks or delays, escalating when appropriate
  • Enable Strategic Decision-Making: Provide insights and analyses that inform trade-offs, prioritization, and investment decisions through development of detailed yet intuitive dashboards and analytics
  • Influence Optimal Resourcing: Partner with VP, PPM to develop capacity models to anticipate resource needs, resolve gaps, and ensure effective allocation of talent and capabilities across portfolio
  • Implement Best Practices: Promote project management standards, tools, dashboards, and processes that drive efficiency and continuous improvement within project teams
  • Support Portfolio Review and Governance: Contribute operational support and content to project and portfolio reviews, governance bodies, and other forums as required
  • Support R&D Initiatives: Partner with VP, PPM on cross-department initiatives, contributing project management and operational support as needed
