About The Position

Purpose Accountable for leading, guiding & directing the functional responsibilities within an area of assignment. Enable ministry-level or enterprise-wide functional strategy to address internal or external business & regulatory issues. Provide functional expertise & ensure fulfillment of performance & service standards. Responsible for consistent operating performance & achieving financial goals. Identifies, defines & solves complex problems that impact the management & direction of the business. Collaborates with Services Areas, Regions & Health Ministries to ensure consistency & integration of strategy & operations while maintaining awareness of new industry developments & standards. Provides decision support, operations & / or optimization leadership focus. Leading standardization / systemness & optimization of policy, process, methodology, establishing a national community of practice. Oversee Vendor / Contract Labor Management including centralizing strategy & optimizing spend. Strategic Support & Accountability: Collaborates in system-wide strategy development & deployment of functional area priorities & initiatives. Responsible for supporting regional efforts to comply with functional area priorities. Accountable for the selection, evaluation & overall success of the functional leadership teams. Organization-wide focal point for establishing functional strategies & governance over financials & staffing. Accountable for communication between service area functional area, RHM & Region leaders. Operational Delivery: Responsible for measuring & reporting KPIs / metrics & value delivery. Providing advice, guidance & leadership for the colleague life cycle. Maintains a Working Knowledge of applicable federal, state & local laws / regulations, Trinity Health Integrity & Compliance Program & Code of Conduct, as well as other policies, procedures & guidelines in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical & professional behavior & safe work practices. Functional Role (not inclusive of titles or advancement career progression) Leads the strategic direction, planning, and execution of the Hospital Turnaround / Best Practice Program across the health system. Oversees identification, assessment, prioritization, and intervention in underperforming hospitals that are failing to meet financial goals. Directs multidisciplinary operational turnaround initiatives from intake through implementation and stabilization, integrating financial analysis, operational redesign, cost reduction strategies, clinical efficiency improvements, and change management to achieve rapid and sustainable financial recovery. Defines program and project scope, establishes governance structures, assigns responsibilities, monitors progress against key performance indicators (KPIs), oversees risks and issues, and ensures alignment with system-wide priorities, executive sponsorship, and resource availability. Fosters strong, collaborative, and trust-based relationships with hospital CEOs, Regional CFOs, and CFOs across the enterprise, serving as a strategic partner to align executive visions with financial realities, facilitate open communication, build consensus on aggressive improvement plans, and enable joint ownership of turnaround success through regular engagement, transparent data sharing, and mutual respect. Partners with system office executive leaders to continuously align the turnaround / best practice deployment approach with the strategic initiatives of the enterprise. Must have the ability to create and execute multi-year strategies. Oversee a team of professionals providing direct leadership in hiring, onboarding, talent development, performance management, coaching, mentoring, workload balancing, and succession planning to build high-performing turnaround expertise. Partners with hospital executives, clinical leaders, finance teams, and other stakeholders as a key decision-maker to drive transformational change, remove barriers, escalate issues effectively, and secure buy-in for aggressive performance improvement plans. Builds and sustains a culture of continuous performance improvement within the program and across the enterprise, promoting data-driven decision-making, process simplification, standardization, and measurable impacts on cost reduction, revenue growth, operational efficiency, and quality. Translates complex financial, operational, and quantitative data into actionable insights and clear recommendations for senior executives, local and Trinity boards, and clinical leaders; communicates with confidence, precision, diplomacy, and authority to influence decisions and drive consensus during high-stakes situations. Maintains strong collaborative relationships with system office leaders; their team serves as the primary escalation point for turnaround / best practice related issues, mitigates conflicts, and navigates differing perspectives to achieve unified outcomes. Partners with system office leaders to identify best practices and work with cross-functional teams to support their implementation/monitoring in the field.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field
  • Minimum of 10 - 15 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare operations, financial management, or performance improvement, with at least 5 years in a director-level or equivalent role overseeing turnaround or restructuring initiatives.
  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years of external consulting experience in healthcare operations improvement.
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite (Windows, Teams, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Outlook) skills.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading teams to achieve financial turnaround in healthcare settings, including experience with hospitals or health systems facing revenue shortfalls, cost overruns, or operational inefficiencies.
  • Ability to manage and develop a team with expertise in coaching, performance evaluation, and talent development.
  • Strong financial acumen, including experience with budgeting, financial analysis, revenue cycle management, and implementing cost-saving measures in a healthcare environment.
  • Excellent strategic planning, project management, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex data and drive cross-functional collaboration to meet aggressive financial targets.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with experience presenting to executive leadership, boards, and stakeholders on performance improvement outcomes.
  • Proven ability to build and develop executive relationships in both the field and System Office.
  • Considerable leadership experience managing complex projects and interfacing with executive leadership and fast changing environment.
  • Must be able to provide executive coaching throughout all engagements.
  • Proficient knowledge in seven (7) business operations disciplines and supported business processes, with expert level knowledge in at least four (4) disciplines.
  • Business operations disciplines include, but are not limited to project/program management, financial management, contract performance management, process improvement, people leadership, workflow integration, technical and business communications, research/benchmarking, statistical analysis, change leadership and healthcare administration.
  • Ability to operate in an ambiguous and highly matrixed organizational structure in an autonomous self-directed manner under frequently changing structures and requirements and work priorities.
  • Must be able to constantly reprioritize resource deployment.
