About The Position

AMERIND is a federally chartered, tribally owned corporation, formed under Section 17 of the Indian Reorganization Act (25 U.S.C. § 5124) by its Members, the governmental units of federally recognized Tribal Nations that administer federally funded housing programs for American Indian and Alaska Native families. AMERIND has the operating authority to work with Tribal Governments, Enterprises, and Citizens for Property and Liability, Workers Compensation, Homeowners and Renters, Employee Benefits coverage, Fleet Auto coverage, and Critical Infrastructure development. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field and a minimum of seven (7) years commercial P&C underwriting insurance experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years managerial experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation, no felony, theft, or fraud convictions
  • New employees must complete the Associate in Insurance (AINS) designation within six months from the end of the 90-day evaluation period to be eligible for advancement and incentive compensation.
  • For continued employment, employees must complete an elective course and six hours of professional development within 12 months after the end of the 90-day evaluation period.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal, and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of property and casualty risk assessment and underwriting policies, and regulations specific to property, fleet auto, liability and workers’ compensation.
  • Knowledge of underwriting principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of commercial/residential construction codes and techniques.
  • Ability to analyze situations and adopt appropriate courses of action.
  • Possess leadership and team management skills, with the proven ability to motivate, mentor, and enhance team productivity and morale.
  • Possess interpersonal skills for building and maintaining effective internal and external relationships.
  • Ability to drive results through leading cross-functional teams and working collaboratively.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds, employees and officials.

Responsibilities

  • Communicates goals, objectives, policies and procedures in accordance with applicable tribal, federal, state, and local laws, rules and regulations.
  • Lead, mentor and develop a high-performing underwriting team, fostering a culture of excellence, trust and collaboration.
  • Ensure team members have sufficient knowledge and skill to analyze, research, determine risk, establish premium rates and promote products.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain underwriting policies and procedures in line with company goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide critical underwriting insights influencing coverage, pricing and guidelines.
  • Occasionally underwrite complex accounts in alignment with company strategy, guidelines, and reinsurance considerations, escalating as appropriate to the Chief Operations Officer.
  • Provides assistance to underwriters on more complex applications/submissions.
  • Ensure that staff provide prompt and courteous service in alignment with departmental standards of providing exceptional customer service.
  • Provides reports to the Leadership Team regarding the status and developments in the company’s portfolio.
  • Partner closely with Business Development, Risk Control and Product Development to identify client needs and craft underwriting solutions that differentiate the company in the marketplace.
  • Represents company in meetings with potential clients and trade association meetings to promote products and business lines, as necessary.
  • Hosts regular staff meetings to ensure communication between personnel and departmental activities.
  • Promote knowledge transfer through client interactions, team training, and external engagements.
  • Achieves financial objectives by preparing and administering annual budget, and by presenting and justifying budget recommendations.
  • Demonstrate success in leading innovative solutions that prioritize customer value.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of all privileged information.
  • Stay current with industry trends and best practices by attending seminars, workshops, and conferences, participating in professional networks and communities, and engaging with vendor and agency representatives.
  • Participates in cross-functional team process improvement projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
