About The Position

Direct and manage district's transportation and vehicle maintenance program. Oversee maintenance of all district-owned vehicles. Ensure safe and efficient operation of transportation department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Ability to direct and manage operations of a large fleet of vehicles
  • Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam
  • Knowledge of energy management and vehicle repair and maintenance
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel
  • Ability to coordinate district function
  • Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Two-three years’ experience as Director of Transportation, preferably with public school’ districts
  • Five years’ experience as a bus driver

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and update bus routes and schedules for all schools in district and develop plan to meet future transportation needs.
  • Oversee the coordination of transportation for extracurricular activities and special programs.
  • Respond to after-hours emergency calls as needed.
  • Operate bus and deliver buses to drivers when breakdowns occur.
  • Notify bus drivers, schools, and public of any changes in bus routes and schedules.
  • Implement federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in transportation area.
  • Compile, maintain, file, and present all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required in transportation area.
  • Implement district's student discipline policies and communicate to students expected behavior when using district transportation.
  • Enforce safety standards that conform with state, federal, and insurance regulations and develop a program of preventive safety.
  • Develop training options and improvement plans to ensure exemplary operation of transportation department.
  • Comply with applicable personnel policies.
  • Prepare data necessary to process transportation payroll
  • Direct repair of all district-owned vehicles and oversee plans for preventive maintenance.
  • Ensure that vehicle repair requests are processed timely and prioritize work orders.
  • Oversee the contract services for services that cannot be performed in shop.
  • Oversee fuel deliveries and distribution.
  • Manage the recommendation of disposal of obsolete or work out vehicles and equipment.
  • Recommend purchases of necessary.
  • Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  • Administer transportation budget and ensure that programs are cost-effective and that funds are managed wisely.
  • Initiate purchases and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies.
  • Maintain current inventory of supplies and parts to avoid ordering delays.
  • Approve and forward invoices for transportation to accounting department.
  • Recommend disposal of obsolete or worn out vehicles and equipment.
  • Recommend purchase of vehicles as necessary
  • Implement district’s student discipline policies and ensure expectations about appropriate behavior when using district transportation are communicated to students.
  • Review student behavior reports and conduct conferences with parents, students, and drivers on disciplinary issues.
  • Enforce student discipline and suspension of riding privileges for any student who violates rules and regulations.
  • Investigate reported concerns and take appropriate action to resolve issues.
  • Ensure bus drivers are assigned to routes and substitutes are available as needed.
  • Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate all transportation personnel and make sound recommendations about placement, assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
  • Prepare, process, and maintain all documents required to verify safety certification and alcohol and drug testing of bus drivers.
  • Evaluate employee job performance to ensure effectiveness.
  • Enforce safety standards that conform with state, federal, and insurance regulations and develop a program of preventive safety.
  • Advise administration about inclement weather conditions that may result in the closing of schools or road hazards.
  • Ensure pertinent information is gathered in investigations of school bus accidents and student safety violations.
  • Ensure training programs are in place and conduct training programs to promote a safe work environment.
  • Ensure that transportation equipment is in excellent operating condition.
  • Perform disaster duty as needed (hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards, etc.)
  • Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible
  • Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or other administrators that are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position
  • Supervise and evaluate performance of coordinator of transportation, shop foreman, dispatcher, parts manger, bus drivers, bus monitors, and transportation secretary.
