Director of Thrift Store Operations_ JOB SUMMARY: Manages and directs the Salvage/Thrift Stores in it’s work of reconditioning donated materials and merchandise into saleable form. Provides supervision and control of collecting and transporting donated materials, segregating, classifying, storing and dispensing of such materials and pricing. Provides maintenance of facilities and equipment and satisfies the transportation requirements of the organization. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: This job description should not be interpreted as all-inclusive. It is intended to identify the essential functions and requirements of this position. Plans, schedules, supervises, coordinates, monitors, and evaluates the work performed by Thrift Store supervisors and their staff; trains and instructs staff in the proper methods and procedures for performing work; inspects work in progress and upon completion in order to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; makes hiring and firing recommendations; conducts performance evaluations of supervisory personnel. Prepares long range plans for the Salvage/Thrift Stores based on guidance received through the Officer(s)-In-Charge; develops and maintains improved conditions and procedures with the organization in general and within the department in order to meet workload requirements. Prepares and provides information for the operations portion of the budget based on guidance and instruction received; utilizes the approved budget to govern the operations of the department. Reviews and analyzes the performance continually to determine effectiveness and take corrective action where necessary; develops performance standards and keeps the Officer(s)-In-Charge informed of significant facts concerning department operations. Maintains statistical information and records sufficient to maintain awareness of the productive capacity available and to make sales projects and assist in short and long range planning. Performs public relations functions; seeks increased support from the general public and works to increase awareness and understanding of The Salvation Army; participates in public appearances in order to promote The Salvation Army; stimulates materials procurement through improved solicitation methods. Receives, segregates, classifies, prices, stores or otherwise disposes of material received from contributors. Supervises all transportation operations including pick-up of material, deliver to stores, transportation between stores, and all special transportation requirements. Services and otherwise maintains transportation equipment; maintains all equipment, either directly with maintenance staff available, or through regular commercial facilities; makes alterations to premises as authorized by the Officer(s)-In-Charge(s)-In-Charge. Receives salvage and scrap material; sorts and classifies the same according to type and market; prepares for sale into bales or lots; negotiates for sales and makes arrangements for shipping when necessary. Maintains inventory records on all materials covering store shipments, etc.; compiles all production statistics and reports and maintains an organized filing system of the same. Ensures that job descriptions for employees are current and applicable; schedules in-service training for department supervisors and employees. Ensures knowledge, enforcement, documentation, and compliance with OSHA and wage and hour regulations. Conducts transportation training and ensures that Corps requirements for Truck Drivers are met. Collects and files daily production sheets; develops weekly and monthly production goals for each department in workshop including the store. Develops and maintains plans for fire and other evacuation procedures; establishes and maintains systems for internal security. Develops and maintains a comprehensive filing system (capital equipment, inventory, safety, production records, etc.) OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: Attends The Salvation Army Advisory Board meetings when requested. Furnishes Advisory Board with monthly reports. Cooperates with the Advisory Board Committee. Performs other related work as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field
  • Two years progressively responsible supervisory experience in retail management or thrift store operations
  • Or Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Valid State Driver’s License
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of production control, planning, scheduling, and budgeting as it relates to thrift store, transportation, and warehouse operations
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of personnel supervision.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of shop operation and familiarity with modern shop equipment and processes in order to plan for the equipment additions and replacements that best serve the needs of the work performed.
  • Knowledge of materials handling equipment, including operations and maintenance requirements.
  • Knowledge of transportation equipment, its capabilities, and limitations, and dispatching including general practices.
  • Knowledge of both the construction and maintenance of plant equipment.
  • Ability to prepare accurate and complete statistical and sales records and reports.
  • Ability to develop, enforce, and improve standard operating procedures in order to maximize production and benefits of program operations.
  • Ability to train, motivate, and lead subordinate supervisory staff.
  • Ability to perform long range planning.
  • Ability to prepare operating budgets and to ensure expenditures are in compliance with budget restrictions.
  • Ability to negotiate prices in the sale of salvage.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with businesses and other social service agencies in the community.
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
