About The Position

Lead perioperative operations at a 230+ bed acute care hospital in Reston, Virginia, recognized as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures by Joint Commission for multiple consecutive years. This Director of Surgical Services role oversees 100 FTEs across 18 operating rooms and 2 endoscopy suites performing 12,000 annual surgeries including the region's highest volume of spine procedures. The facility features advanced robotics programs (2 Mako, 2 Globus, 3 da Vinci XI systems), comprehensive surgical specialties including neurosurgery, general surgery, orthopedics, cardiovascular, and oncology, plus certification as Stroke Center, Total Joint Center, and Northern Virginia's only accredited Chest Pain Center. The position reports to COO with oversight of 2 managers and strategic partnership with CVOR manager preparing for open heart program launch in early 2026. Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from accredited program
  • Current Virginia RN license in good standing or active multi-state compact license
  • Minimum 3 years of surgical services experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in perioperative operations, multi-OR oversight, and strategic leadership
  • Strong business acumen, physician relations, and financial management skills

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree in Nursing, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience in surgical services leadership role or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • CNOR (Certified Nurse Operating Room) certification
  • CSSM (Certified Surgical Services Manager) certification
  • Experience with robotics programs and cardiovascular surgery program development
  • Background in high-volume surgical centers (10,000+ annual cases)

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership with focus on outstanding patient service, service line growth, leadership development, and resource management across surgical operations.
  • Maintain strong physician and administration relationships while functioning at high level of business acumen.
  • Set strategic vision and goals for surgical services department supporting organizational mission and growth objectives.
  • Design standards of care and develop processes to measure and ensure consistent compliance across perioperative services.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate ongoing surgical services programs ensuring quality patient care consistent with facility mission.
  • Actively participate in service, departmental, and hospital-wide committees providing ongoing communication and leadership representation.
  • Advance customer experience in surgical services through evidence-based practices and patient-centered care delivery.
  • Coach immediate subordinates through feedback, constructive critique, individual development plans, and performance documentation.
  • Effectively communicate departmental, organizational, and industry information to staff while adhering to HR policies.
  • Facilitate evidence-based employee engagement practices and build strong relationships to deliver organizational goals.
  • Utilize talent review data for pipeline development and foster strategic career advancement for perioperative services leaders.
  • Monitor compliance with regulatory, accrediting, and hospital policies including environmental, patient, and personnel safety.
  • Oversee performance improvement program consistently monitoring and evaluating critical aspects of surgical care.
  • Lead preparation and launch of open heart program targeting early 2026 implementation.
  • Manage 18 operating rooms, 2 endoscopy suites, and advanced robotics programs supporting diverse surgical specialties.
  • Oversee high-volume spine surgery program maintaining position as regional leader in Northern Virginia.
