About The Position

The Director of Study Abroad Programs provides leadership for all aspects of UNLV's outbound student Study Abroad Programs and activities, reporting to the Senior Executive Director of UNLV Global. This role involves collaborating with senior leadership to set strategic direction and goals for study abroad programs. Key responsibilities include strategic planning, development, implementation, expansion, and assessment of high-impact learning opportunities that are integral to students' academic paths and uphold academic rigor and global competence. The Director manages academic approval, operational oversight, financial sustainability, compliance, and risk management for study abroad programming, including faculty-led programs. The position requires collegial work across academic and administrative units to review and approve new international activities for students. Additionally, the Director is responsible for managing the institution’s Study Abroad Scholarship portfolio, supervising and mentoring the Study Abroad Programs team, and guiding students interested in the Fulbright program and other nationally competitive awards. This role contributes to the core mission of Academic Affairs by increasing enrollment, promoting equitable student success, removing barriers, ensuring inclusive access, eliminating achievement gaps, and providing outstanding services and support to students, aligning with Top Tier initiatives and the SVPAA mission. Requirements

  • Master’s degree or JD from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • 5-7 years of related professional experience in international education, education abroad, or related field.
  • Background in program development, higher education leadership, cross-cultural work, as well as managing complex programs and supervising staff.
  • 1-3 years supervisory experience.
  • 1-3 years management experience.

  • Experience studying, working and living abroad, especially in non-English language speaking countries.
  • Experience leading an international education office.
  • 7-9 years related professional experience (if minimum qualifications are met).

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for all aspects of the institution's outbound student Study Abroad Programs and activities.
  • Work with the Senior Executive Director of UNLV Global, the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, and senior leadership to set goals and the strategic direction for study abroad programs at UNLV.
  • Responsible for the strategic planning, development, implementation, expansion, and assessment of high-impact learning opportunities in Study Abroad that are integral to students' academic paths and uphold the university’s commitment to academic rigor and global competence.
  • Manage the complex interplay of academic approval, operational oversight, financial sustainability, compliance, and risk management associated with study abroad programing, including faculty-led programs.
  • Work collegially across academic and administrative units and across UNLV Global to review and approve new international activities for students.
  • Manage the institution’s Study Abroad Scholarship portfolio.
  • Supervise and mentor the Study Abroad Programs team.
  • Provide guidance to students interested in the Fulbright program and other nationally competitive awards that provide funding to students and administrators for study abroad programing.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Executive Director of UNLV Global to set annual goals that align with Top Tier initiatives and SVPAA mission.
  • Identify and track core metrics to assess success.
  • Contribute to enrollment growth, removing barriers to student success, ensuring inclusive and equitable access to resources, working to eliminate achievement gaps, and providing outstanding services and support to students across the lifecycle.
