About The Position

As a member of the Vanderbilt – NYC campus’s leadership team, the Director of Student Affairs will develop and manage comprehensive student services for undergraduate study away students that fosters a supportive and engaging campus environment. Additionally, the Director will provide support to students within the Master of Science in Business and Technology program that creates a safe and healthy learning environment in accordance with the norms of the Vanderbilt community. In addition to providing oversight to the Student Affairs functions of the New York campus, the Director is expected to be a hands-on, student-facing presence on campus. The Director is responsible for discerning when to refer or escalate student issues and concerns to offices located on the Nashville-based home campus of Vanderbilt University. This position is based in New York City and works onsite. This position is a full-time, exempt, fully benefits eligible role.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, or related field is required.
  • At least five years of experience or equivalent is necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal/human relations skills including ability to develop and cultivate professional relationships is preferred.
  • Ability to supervise staff and work independently is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically and proactively problem-solve is preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Housing experience is preferred.
  • Experience being in a duty/on-call rotation responding to crisis situations, counseling, and conflict mediation is preferred.
  • Proficiency with higher education systems such as Maxient, StarRez, Oracle, and reporting tools to streamline communication and improve service delivery is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve on the Vanderbilt – NYC leadership team to coordinate with academic and operations partners under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Housing & Residential Experience.
  • Lead comprehensive student services for undergraduates studying away at Vanderbilt – NYC with particular focus on the residential experience, coordination of care and support resources, student activities, and application of relevant policies and procedures of the University.
  • Provide strategic leadership and day-to-day management for housing and residential experience operations in New York.
  • Oversee successful management of housing assignments, occupancy management, customer service, including timely response to roommate conflicts, repairs and maintenance, move-in/move-out, cleaning of common spaces, and similar.
  • Supervise the Assistant Director of Residential Experience and the Residential Experience Coordinator for Vanderbilt – NYC.
  • Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with Vanderbilt - NYC leadership, faculty, staff, and both undergraduate and graduate/professional students.
  • Thoroughly understand and independently apply Vanderbilt’s protocols and policies in order to make appropriate referrals of student concerns to Title IX, Equal Opportunity and Access (EOA), Student Access, Housing & Residential Experience, Student Care Network, Project Safe, Student Accountability, CARE team, and similar resources.
  • Develop, in consultation with Nashville-based offices, specific protocols and policies for the New York campus that add or clarify, but do not conflict with policies and protocols applicable to all students.
  • Support the Master of Science in Business and Technology program in addressing health and safety concerns of students via direct behavioral intervention and follow-up as well as referral to appropriate local and campus resources.
  • Respond to students, faculty, staff, neighbors, and parents to resolve concerns and improve operations.
  • Coordinate emergency response for students of concern, including distressed, missing, or intoxicated students, in concert with on-site Vanderbilt University Public Safety personnel.
  • Refer students to supportive resources both on and off campus in NYC and Nashville with follow-up through appropriate reporting mechanisms (e.g. Student of Concern reports).
  • Address behavioral concerns arising from student internship sites and elevate concerns to appropriate campus resources, such as Student Accountability, Title IX, EOA, and others, as needed.
  • Serve as essential staff during campus closures and crisis response.
  • Plan or assist in planning student engagement activities and programs to create connection and foster a sense of belonging among study away as well as graduate/professional students
  • Collaborate and align the academic programming initiatives of the Senior Associate Provost with the comprehensive student services provided.
  • Work with students to create community through student-led initiatives.
  • Provide ongoing information and training on support resources, mandatory reporting obligations, and community expectations.
  • Maintain connection with healthcare providers, recreational facilities, places of worship, package delivery services, dining, and similar in the local area to ensure access to holistic services for students.
  • Contribute to the broader mission and objectives of Student Affairs and the University by serving on divisional and institutional committees, task forces, and working groups.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of relevant university policies, procedures, and systems—such as those related to travel, procurement, expense, and time reporting—to ensure effective, compliant, and responsible operations.
  • Demonstrate a collaborative spirit by supporting divisional colleagues and engaging in efforts that advance shared goals and strategic priorities.
