About The Position

Under the direction of the Vice President of Clinical Operations, this position is responsible to assist in accomplishing the clinical and organizational goals of Bakersfield Family Medical Group (BFMG) Clinical Operations as it relates to specialty medicine, by providing staff oversight, recruitment, and education. The Director of Specialty Medicine is responsible for first-line communication and interactions with the functions and activities of the clinical staff working in specialty medicine and health education. You must support the development of both the clinical and non-clinical staff and foster knowledge and growth to achieve excellence through the delivery of evidenced based practice. The Director is responsible for the development, maintenance and upkeep of the Specialty Clinic policies, procedures, and job descriptions. The Director will also help coordinate member’s health education and monitor the effectiveness of the program through Quality Improvement data collection and interpretation. The Director will work with the VP of Clinical Operations to update and maintain competencies of clinical and non-clinical staff as well identify new competencies that need to be developed. The Director will also implement and promote a disease management program and coordinate efforts with the Leads of Provider Relations, Utilization Management, Customer Service and Marketing to plan and implement an integrated orientation program and design and distribute to staff model and IPA physicians, written materials to inform and promote the health education program.  The Director of Specialty Medicine will interact with other departments, clinic personnel, and outside providers in a professional and friendly manner, to create and maintain a positive relationship with our internal and external customers.

Requirements

  • Registered Nursing degree.
  • Minimum of five years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Two-years supervisory experience required.
  • Valid CA Driver’s License and current vehicle insurance with clean driving record.

  • Experience in managed care preferred.
  • Knowledge of methods and procedures utilized in a clinical setting preferred.
  • Curriculum development experience preferred.
  • Experience and knowledge in organizational structure of managed care organizations and provider networks preferred.

  • Responsible for working with the VP of Clinic Operations and Manager of Clinics for staff scheduling and adjustment of those schedules to ensure complete clinic coverage.
  • Assists with data collection of specialty clinic activities and ensure integrity of the data prior to reviewing with the SVPHS.
  • Monitor clinic activity and patient flow to ensure efficient and effective patient care.
  • Work with Clinic Trainers and Auditors to ensure staff is trained adequately to perform their job responsibilities.
  • Exhibit a team approach and an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ensure staff compliance with company policies, procedures, monthly and annual training, state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Engage with staff in addressing concerns and ensure timely and appropriate responses are given to the staff after review with the VP of Clinical Operations.
  • Collaborates with the VP to recommend educational strategies for the implementation of clinical standards.
  • Assist the VP in responding to identified needs of BFMG Specialty Clinics to promote quality patient care and/or safety.
  • Design, implement and maintain a comprehensive Health Education Plan and Program that meets the requirements and standards of the health plans.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the standards, policies, and procedures for the Health Education Program.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of a provider orientation/education program that informs and in-services contract providers on the Health Education Program i.e., access and referrals.
  • Responsible for coordinating oversight and support for mandated Health Education services delivered including preventative education and counseling, member education and counseling regarding available services and preventative care, provider education material as needed, conducting the Health Education Needs Assessment for members.
  • Assist in the design, development and implementation of an integrated member orientation program encompassing both access to services and education programs in collaboration with the Utilization management department, the Provider Relations Department, the Customer Service Department and the Marketing Department.
  • Coordinate identified disease management programs, supervise the development, implementation, and evaluation phase of each program.
  • Assist Health Education staff in finding and interpreting resources from the literature on specific programs.
  • Assist in the presentation of each program in a written format that will be used to define expectations and outcomes.
  • Coordinate the implementation of each program.
  • Evaluate with the assistance from management the effectiveness of each program.
  • In coordination with Provider Relations and other appropriate personnel/departments, coordinate provider education lectures/forums and/or informational opportunities to present information on requested or identified health related topics.
  • Develop written health educational materials.
  • Develop surveys following health plan guidelines to identify and plan educational needs and the effectiveness of implemented programs.
  • Plan and participate in community outreach activities and health related fairs by promoting BFMG and CCPN health education programs.
  • Ensure that any communications from BFMG of the VP of their designees are distributed to the appropriate staff in a prompt and efficient manner.
  • Respond to changes in clinical practice and develops program with the VP of Clinical Operations to support these changes.
  • Maintain and update policies, procedures, job descriptions and competencies and ensure compliance to all performance improvement initiatives and quality measures i.e. PAS, Star and HEDIS.
  • Ensures that educational programs are congruent with organizational missions, values, and goals of BFMG
  • Develop and research processes as BFMG determines additional specialty practices will be brough into staff model.
  • Maintains flexibility when managing multiple roles and responsibilities.
  • Promotes a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Supervises and participates in the provision of general nursing care services.
  • Ensure employees are adequately trained to perform assigned duties safely and correctly.
  • Identify staff development and training needs.
  • Ensure on-going staff education and competencies validation through mandatory annual competency fair, schedule refresher, or new-product-release training as needed. This includes any computer upgrade training requested by the IT/MIS Department.
  • Monitor, track and ensure compliance to the different department specific quality improvement goals.
  • Ensure maintenance and cleanliness of facility through use of clinic staff and other support staff.
  • Evaluate and verify employee performance through review of completed work assignments and work techniques on an on-going basis.
  • Regular attendance to ensure efficient clinic operations.
  • Step in as emergency staff coverage when needed.
  • Act as liaison between staff and the VP of Clinical Operations by investigating and resolving patient and staff complaints and refer issues to others as needed.
  • Establish and maintain active involvement with appropriate medical staff departments and community groups to meet the goals and objectives of BFMG.
