About The Position

The Director of Special Education provides strategic leadership and administrative oversight for the planning, development, and implementation of all special education programs and related services within the District. The Director is responsible for ensuring that the District maintains full compliance with federal and state mandates while fostering an instructional environment that promotes the academic and social-emotional advancement of students with diverse learning needs.

Responsibilities

  • Regulatory Compliance: Serve as the District’s primary authority on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) regulations.
  • Instructional Leadership: Direct the design and delivery of specialized instruction and evidence-based interventions to ensure students receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).
  • Personnel Administration: Oversee the recruitment, assignment, supervision, and formal evaluation of special education faculty, paraprofessionals, and itinerant service providers (e.g., Speech-Language Pathologists, Psychologists).
  • Professional Development: Identify systemic needs and coordinate comprehensive training for general and special education staff regarding inclusive practices, IEP compliance, and behavioral support strategies.
  • Conflict Resolution: Represent the District in formal proceedings, including Due Process hearings and mediation, while maintaining collaborative relationships with parents, legal counsel, and community stakeholders.
