About The Position

This innovative, detail oriented and security minded professional is responsible for the organization’s safety and loss prevention programs. The Director identifies areas of risk and develops, maintains, and implements safety and security procedures designed to minimize and eliminate unsafe work conditions, security risks, and financial loss. The Director supervises, directs, and develops the Safety and LP staff. The Director ensures compliance with CARF requirements for the applicable divisions. The Director is required to travel to all GGW locations as needed using their own vehicle. The Director is expected to model divisional and organizational RISE values and meet established expectations. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a safety or loss prevention related discipline or the equivalent combination of education, professional training, and work experience.
  • Minimum seven years of safety and/or loss prevention experience, with at least three years in a managerial capacity.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety and loss prevention best practices to include application of physical security systems and investigation techniques.
  • Full understanding of safety and liability issues that arise within retail operations.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule when necessary to include mornings, evenings and weekends.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to travel to various retail stores throughout the region.
  • Knowledge and experience in Workers Compensation, OSHA, ADA regulations and safety training.
  • High level of organization skills with the ability to prioritize and work effectively on multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent customer service and employee relations skills and the ability to work with staff of all levels and effectively communicating with diverse audiences.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents.
  • Proven discretion and confidentiality.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional certification (i.e. National Association of Safety Professionals, CSP-Certified Safety Professional).
  • 10 years’ experience in administering safety and/or loss prevention programs.
  • OSHA certification.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Spanish language or ASL proficiency.
  • Extensive management experience in a multiple retail location environment.
  • Working knowledge of surveillance monitoring systems and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, develop, and implement loss prevention and safety programs designed to minimize liability, and financial and operational impact.
  • Provide strategic planning to prevent the following but not limited to; a. Workplace injuries b. Workplace violence c. Handling or misuse of drugs within the workplace
  • Manage Workers Compensation program including but not limited to; a. Investigation of incidents b. Input of data to insurance carrier c. Analysis of claims data d. Interaction with claimants to gather information and limit exposure e. Interaction with claims administrators to implement solutions and limit exposure f. Developing alternate work duties for employee on restrictions g. Represents Goodwill at Workers Compensation hearings.
  • Thorough and complete investigations and documentation of all reported incidents of theft. Partnering with HR and Retail management to determine investigation outcomes.
  • Establish strong partnerships with GGW management and functional divisions, the local law enforcement community, and various vendors. It is expected the Director will represent Goodwill in a professional manner that reflects the values and standards of the organization’s mission and goals.
  • Provide ongoing training and support of safety and LP policies and procedures. Training must be designed for both face to face classroom setting and digital platforms.
  • Ensure compliance with CARF requirements in Health and Safety including but not limited to; a. Inspection and safety drill tracking b. Critical incident training and tracking c. Safety training tracking d. First aid kit availability and stocking e. Fire extinguisher inspections
  • Interface with federal, state and local government environmental regulatory agencies and ensure all appropriate filings and postings are completed with particular regard to OSHA and the OSHA 300 logs.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining safety and loss prevention metrics that identify trends and track actions.
  • Performance of audits in the retail stores for loss prevention and cash handling and development of solutions for all unacceptable findings
  • Thorough understanding of point of sale processes and disciplines in coordination with IT department and third party vendor. Creation of meaningful exception reporting stream that addresses issues on a proactive basis.
  • Produces reports and/or data in various formats.
  • Provides guidance to COO in budgeting for safety program.
  • Proper disposal of hazardous waste materials
  • Placement of all surveillance cameras and servicing of the equipment when necessary including the initial layout of new store equipment and installation.
  • Generate reports summarizing security issues and briefing of retail management on trends and breaches.
  • Coordination with maintenance department for key control in our retail stores and attended donation sites.
  • Networks with other Goodwill’s, Goodwill International and other organizations to ensure best practices.
  • Extensive travel throughout the DC metropolitan area.
