About The Position

The Director of Revenue is responsible for the revenue function of the firm by performing essential duties personally or through delegation/supervision of subordinates. The Director of Revenue maintains professionalism and strict confidentiality in all client and firm matters. Katten offers a hybrid work model, allowing the flexibility to work both on-site and remotely on a regular basis (KattenFlex). This position will reside in the New York office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent (advanced degree preferred) and 15 or more years of progressive billing/collections experience preferably in a large legal or professional services firm are required. Eight or more years of supervisory experience is highly desired, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Computer proficient with extensive knowledge and understanding of accounting systems (CMS/Aderant or Elite are required), E-billing systems (E-billing Hub or Bill Blast), Excel, Power Point, Outlook and MS Word. Experience and understanding of Iridium or other similar dashboard software is desired but not required.
  • Demonstrated record driving and leading client billing and collections functions, including e-Billing, in a sophisticated, fast-paced, deadline-driven, and cohesive environment; proven success managing, mentoring, and developing high-performance teams; cultivating a unified mentality and approach, and the highest levels of operational excellence.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills; the ability to communicate effectively with partners and other key firm stakeholders, to lead through influence rather than control, and to create consensus based support for business strategies and decisions.
  • Demonstrated success managing, mentoring, and developing a team of top-tier professionals and leading all functional areas of billing and collections, and related revenue finance areas; extensive background driving continuous improvement, innovation, and optimization.
  • Dynamic energy level, an unquestioned work ethic, willingness to “roll up your sleeves,” and work closely in a collaborative manner with colleagues and team members.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the firm’s client billing, e-Billing and collections capabilities across its global offices, collaborating and interfacing with the firm’s partners, Chief Financial Officer, the firm’s Billing & Collections Committee, and other members of the finance team. Provide proactive advice and guidance to firm leadership on billing and collections matters, potential issues and risks, and other key data and analysis.
  • Cultivate seamless and highly effective working relationships, interoperability, and lines of communication with the firm’s partners and across the finance organization.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the firm’s practices, clients, and business, and evaluate and drive corresponding functional enhancements, operational efficiencies, innovation, and continuous improvement across the firm’s revenue functional areas.
  • Design, implement, and maintain controls and methodologies to ensure accurate and prompt processing focusing on the collections of client invoices, with the highest realization of fees. Oversee the firm’s collections team and associated technology/software.
  • Manage project design, implementation, and maintenance of electronic billing processes, task-based billing and reporting, and alternative billing rate programs and templates.
  • Design, implement, and maintain controls and methodologies to ensure accurate and prompt processing collections of client invoices, with the highest realization of fees; oversee the firm’s accounts receivable, and associated technology/software.
  • Manage the firm’s quarterly and year-end billing and collection campaign, through the implementation of strategies that ensure the highest realization of revenue.
  • Ensure the firm’s financial system reflects accurate billing rates for all matters and discuss with the client relationship partner any deviation from rates that has been agreed upon with the client.
  • Maintain expert understanding of governmental, statutory, and other regulatory agency rules and guidelines; communicate the impact of new developments and regulations and ensure that the firm is prepared to implement appropriate changes.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop the firm’s revenue professionals, champion and ensure a highly team-oriented, client service-focused approach and culture, with the utmost commitment to professional excellence.
  • Key contributor in the preparation of the periodic financial presentations, working closely with the Chief Financial Officer and other finance peers.
  • Participate in the onboarding of lateral partners and presentation at newly promoted partners, introducing them to the firm’s Billing and Collections policies and procedures.
  • Co-lead the implementation of the firm’s Annual Billing Rate increase across matters as appropriate through collaboration with the firm’s Pricing department.
  • Key contributor in system upgrades, leading selected workstreams for testing and verification of financial information used in the billing, e-Billing and collections functions.
  • Collaborate in the reconciliation of various system-generated financial reports, ensuring consistency and accuracy of information. Where appropriate, assist in providing recommendations for enhancements to reporting and procedures to ensure accuracy of financial information.
  • Perform complex calculations in support of essential duties and responsibilities.
  • Complete special projects as requested and furnish related information and reports as needed.
