About The Position

The Barnes Center at The Arch is Syracuse University's integrated health and wellness center which incorporates counseling, health, health promotion and recreation. The Director of Recreation Programs and Facilities is a core member of the Health and Wellness leadership team, reporting directly to the Associate Vice President for Health and Wellness. The Director manages and oversees the day-to day operations, maintenance, and programming of recreation facilities and staff, ensuring a safe, positive environment. This role involves supervision of a recreation staff to include full-time time employees and student staff. The Director is also responsible for strategic planning, budget management, risk management planning, and overall maintenance of the facility in collaboration with Syracuse University facilities staff. The Director develops and implements quality assurance initiatives and works closely with the other Barnes Center units to implement holistic and integrative approaches to student wellness.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or higher in recreation, sports management, business administration, or related field is required.
  • Requires at least 10 years of relevant work experience, including supervisory and management experience.
  • Must demonstrate ability to manage and operate facilities, organize and direct recreation programs, and provide staff leadership and management.
  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with budget management.
  • Demonstrate experience overseeing assessment and/or quality improvement programs.
  • Must demonstrate ability to create programing and work environment that is welcoming to all.

Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative leadership to Barnes Center recreation, including, but not limited to strategic planning, development and management of departmental policies and procedures, outcome assessment, quality control, budget oversight and assurance that all recreation facilities are well maintained and operated.
  • Provide oversight to the implementation, review, and recommendations related to facility policies and procedures including facility access, maintenance, emergency action plans (EAP), and standard operating procedures.
  • Collaborates with Student Experience Marketing and Communications to create strategies for all University Recreation programs.
  • Responsible for establishing, reviewing, updating, interpreting, and administrating unit and university policies, including holistic wellness offerings and the integration of accessible accommodations in day-to-day activities.
  • In partnership with the Associate Vice President of Health and Wellness, develops the annual budget, setting appropriate targets for revenue and expenses, including deferred maintenance.
  • Oversight of Tennity Pavilion's staff and programming.
  • Management and oversite of Recreation staff including direct supervision of the Managing Associate Director for Facilities, Managing Associate Director for Programs, and Associate Director of Tennity.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate staff professional development opportunities.
  • Oversees all personnel-related matters within the unit in accordance with university policy, including hiring, termination, promotion, professional development, and training.
  • In partnership with the other Health and Wellness units, design, implement, and evaluate holistic and integrative approaches to student wellness.
  • Serve on university or divisional committees; coordinate recreational activities with academic partners and other units across the university as appropriate.
