About The Position

The Director of Quality is a senior enterprise leadership role responsible for building, leading, and sustaining a unified culture of quality, accountability, and continuous improvement across Harbor Fab. This role ensures that all fabricated steel products, processes, and systems meet or exceed customer requirements, contractual obligations, and applicable codes and standards, including full compliance with AISC Certification requirements. A critical expectation of this role is to culturally align quality processes, systems, and behaviors to advance Harbor Fab’s One Harbor mindset. The Director of Quality ensures that quality standards, expectations, and practices are consistent, transparent, and trusted across all plants, teams, and functions—eliminating silos and reinforcing shared ownership for results. The Director of Quality partners closely with Operations, Project Management, Engineering, Safety, and Supply Chain to shift the organization from inspectiondriven compliance to preventionfocused, rightfirsttime execution that supports predictable outcomes, reduced rework, and exceptional customer confidence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of quality experience in manufacturing or structural steel fabrication, including at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Demonstrated experience in AISCcertified fabrication environments.
  • Current or previous CWI certification.
  • Deep working knowledge of AISC, AWS, and structural steel quality requirements.
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence across departments and locations.
  • Proven ability to drive cultural change, standardization, and continuous improvement.
  • Expertise in rootcause analysis, corrective action systems, and datadriven decisionmaking.
  • Strong communication, coaching, and changemanagement skills.

Responsibilities

  • Quality Management System (QMS) & AISC Certification: Own, maintain, and continuously improve the Quality Management System in compliance with AISC Certification and customer requirements. Lead all activities related to achieving and sustaining AISC Certification, including audits, corrective actions, and management reviews. Ensure the QMS is standardized across all Harbor Fab operations in support of the One Harbor approach. Establish management review cadence, performance metrics, and accountability for action closure.
  • Quality Control & Inspection Systems: Establish standardized inspection and verification processes from material receipt through shipment. Drive firstpass yield and rightfirsttime performance by strengthening upstream controls and reducing reliance on final inspection. Align inspection standard work with production flow, takt, and workcell design. Conduct routine shop audits to verify compliance with drawings, specifications, and workmanship standards.
  • Nonconformance, Corrective & Preventive Action: Lead disciplined rootcause analysis using structured methodologies (5Why, Fishbone, PDCA). Ensure corrective and preventive actions address systemic causes and are verified for effectiveness. Track, trend, and communicate NCR, rework, and defect data across the organization. Establish escalation criteria for systemic quality risks and recurring failures.
  • Leadership, Coaching & Cultural Alignment: Lead, coach, and develop the Quality team while serving as a collaborative partner to Operations leadership. Establish leader standard work for Quality that reinforces Harbor Fab’s Core Values and 23 Fundamentals. Promote shared ownership for quality by training production teams to standards and enabling appropriate selfinspection. Develop succession plan for quality and leadership inspection roles.
  • Supplier & Material Quality: Partner with Sub-Fab Manager a riskbased supplier quality program including qualification, audits, and performance scorecards. Team up with Supply Chain and Operations to resolve supplier quality issues and prevent recurrence. Ensure material identification and conformance from receipt through fabrication and shipment.
  • Metrics, Data & Continuous Improvement: Establish visual quality metrics tied to business outcomes (FPY, NCR rate, rework hours, customer complaints). Use data analytics to identify trends, prioritize improvement efforts, and validate results. Lead continuous improvement initiatives aligned with Lean principles and Harbor Fab operational objectives.
  • Customer & External Interface: Serve as the primary quality point of contact for customers, auditors, and regulatory bodies. Proactively communicate quality risks, mitigation plans, and corrective actions. Participate in prefabrication planning and project kickoff activities to prevent downstream quality issues.
