About The Position

The Director of Outdoor Experience will support a cross-functional work flow, assess and track departmental performance, and insure a collaborative work environment in conjunction with the Director of Programs. This position supervises the four camp directors and their plans of work. This position is responsible for ensuring unified processes across all camps for program design and delivery, camper registration and medical information, seasonal staff hiring, training, and payroll. Scheduling of camp sessions and outdoor programming is required and collaboration on social media and website content to enhance participation in camp and outdoor programming. This position will also be responsible for tracking and analyzing trends in member participation and sales and revenue as it relates to camp and outdoor programming.

  • Willing and able to travel to camps regularly; nights, weekends, and extended hours
  • High school diploma required; Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in related field preferred
  • 4+ years relevant experience in a camp or informal educational environment and demonstrated experience working with youth required
  • 4+ years supervisory experience required
  • Must have and maintain a valid NYS Drivers License
  • Equivalent combinations of education and work experience will be considered
  • Certification in or willingness to obtain certification in CPR/AED, First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, Small Craft Safety or equivalent, National Archery Association certification or equivalent, other outdoor certifications as required
  • NYS Boating license may be required
  • Familiarity with New York State Department of Health summer camp and temporary residence permitting; familiarity with American Camp Association accreditation standards and process

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the Camp Directors, meeting regularly with Camp Directors to support and mentor.
  • Direct the outdoor team’s plan of work in collaboration with the camp directors.
  • Responsible for coordinating and/or facilitating programs that support and retain Girl Scout membership once recruited, with an emphasis on camp and outdoor/environmental education activities.
  • Works in conjunction with the Program Logistics Manager to ensure council integration with the Campspot system, ensuring that the system supports the property needs of all camps.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of CampDoc registration and health forms for council wide camps.
  • Work with Camp Directors and Program Logistics Manager to align camp program builds in GS Events and CampDoc to ensure consistency in messaging across camp program offerings.
  • Contribute to council publications, council website, or other resources as assigned.
  • Work in conjunction with the Marketing Team to ensure a unified message across all social media and web platforms and across all camps; create and implement timely social media posts to enhance participation in camp and outdoor programs.
  • Update girlslovecamp.org website as needed.
  • Ensure that all camp programming incorporates activities or processes that contribute to the intended outcomes for girls and are grade-level appropriate and meet the needs and interests of current and prospective girl members.
  • Promote troop/group and service unit camping opportunities on council-owned properties.
  • Ensure that volunteers have the knowledge and skill to deliver programs in camp and other outdoor settings.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Manager of Volunteer Services to facilitate adult outdoor trainings.
  • Provide support to Troop Leaders and other program delivery volunteers.
  • Seek opportunities to enhance each outdoor experience. This may include education through workshops or council newsletters; development of program resources, and/or working with community partners to offer program activities.
  • Together with Human Resources and Camp Directors, assist in managing the processes of recruitment, screening, hiring, and training of per diem staff, seasonal staff, and/or volunteers to implement programming on all council-owned camps to be consistent and that the camp complies with GSUSA, ACA, NYHD, and council guidelines.
  • Work in partnership with Human Resources to revise application materials and job descriptions as necessary to perform this function.
  • Serve as mentor to Camp Directors seeking to maintain ACA accreditation or become reaccredited.
  • Support seasonal camps by standardizing the seasonal staff training module and ensure implementation across all camp properties.
  • Participate in the design and delivery of programs for girl and adult members as they apply to the outdoor pillar.
  • Prepare and adhere to budgets .
  • Adhere to post-event report schedule as assigned.
  • Ensure that all program initiatives within the outdoor pillar support the council membership plan and GSUSA program model.
  • Ensure that programs incorporate activities or processes that contribute to the intended outcomes for girls.
  • Ensure a variety of program resources, experiences, and opportunities that support progression, leadership, and community partnership and service.
  • Interpret GSUSA and council policies, standards, and program resources in order to ensure quality program for girls and adults.
