About The Position

The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the daily clinical and administrative operations of the Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care (PPEC) center. The DON ensures compliance with the Florida Administrative Code 59A-13, oversees quality patient care for medically fragile infants and children, supervises nursing staff, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to provide comprehensive, family-centered care. The DON divides responsibilities between clinical floor duties (3 days/week) and administrative oversight (2 days/week).

Requirements

  • Active and unrestricted Florida Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of general pediatric nursing experience.
  • At least six (6) months of experience caring for medically fragile infants or children in one of the following settings within the last five (5) years: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care (PPEC) Similar acute or specialized pediatric care setting
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of pediatric nursing standards.
  • Understanding of Medicaid, EQ Health, and PPEC regulatory processes.
  • Ability to manage medication safety protocols.
  • Excellent documentation and quality assurance skills.
  • Strong communication and family education skills.
  • Ability to handle emergencies and staffing shortages.
  • Regulatory compliance knowledge (Florida Administrative Code 59A-13).
  • Ability to stand for extended periods during clinical shifts.
  • Ability to lift and assist pediatric patients as required.
  • Ability to respond promptly in emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing care and interventions to medically fragile pediatric patients.
  • Perform comprehensive assessments for new admissions when needed.
  • Develop, review, and oversee Plans of Care (POCs).
  • Provide coverage for RNs during call-outs or emergencies when necessary.
  • Coordinate with EQ Health and Medicaid to initiate PPEC services.
  • Collaborate with therapists and other interdisciplinary healthcare providers.
  • Work with transportation teams to coordinate Non-Emergency Medical Transportation when needed.
  • Supervise and lead RNs, LPNs, and Aides.
  • Provide orientation, education, and training to new hires regarding PPEC policies and Florida regulations.
  • Take corrective action in cases of medication errors.
  • Complete incident reports for injuries, accidents, or clinical events.
  • Report incidents to appropriate authorities per applicable laws.
  • Foster a collaborative, professional, and compliant work environment.
  • Provide educational services to increase parents’/guardians’ confidence in caring for children with special needs.
  • Assist families coping with chronic illness impacts.
  • Promote normal development and psychosocial adaptation.
  • Support healthy sibling relationships.
  • Provide information about community resources and services.
  • Ensure compliance with Florida Administrative Code 59A-13 (PPEC regulations).
  • Conduct Quality Assurance reviews of clinical documentation and charting.
  • Verify accurate documentation and regulatory compliance.
  • Meet weekly (or as needed) with the Medical Director for care coordination.
  • Oversee reporting requirements and regulatory documentation.
  • Responsible for daily center operations.
  • Oversee staffing coordination in collaboration with Intake Coordinator.
  • Review and verify charting and reports.
  • Ensure policies and procedures align with state and Medicaid guidelines.
  • Maintain CPR and license compliance for nursing staff.
