About The Position

The Director of Nursing – Adult Services is responsible for the operational, clinical, regulatory, and financial performance of all assigned adult inpatient nursing units. Reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer, this role ensures safe, high-quality, patient-centered care delivery consistent with organizational mission, regulatory standards, and evidence-based practice. The Director provides strategic and operational leadership to Nurse Managers and frontline leaders, drives quality improvement initiatives, ensures regulatory compliance, manages budgets and productivity, and promotes a culture of accountability, engagement, and professional practice excellence.

Requirements

  • MSN, MHA, or MBA required
  • BSN degree required if graduate degree is MHA or MBA
  • Graduate of an accredited RN Nursing Program.
  • Minimum 5 years acute care RN experience
  • Minimum 3 years progressive nursing leadership experience
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple units preferred
  • Strong knowledge of hospital KPIs and quality metrics
  • Current CA Registered Nurse license
  • Current BLS certification
  • Current ACLS certification
  • Current Fire Card
  • NIH Stroke Certification within 30 days of hire
  • Assault Response Competency (ARC) required (within 30 days of hire)
  • NE-BC, NEA-BC, CNL, or FACHE required within 6 months of hire

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (DNP, FNP, DHA) strongly preferred
  • NE-BC, NEA-BC, CNL, FACHE or equivalent Professional Nursing Leadership Certification from a nationally recognized organization upon hire preferred

Responsibilities

  • Ensures delivery of safe, effective, evidence-based nursing care.
  • Oversees unit performance related to: Patient safety indicators Infection prevention metrics Falls, pressure injury, CAUTI, CLABSI Sepsis, stroke, and other regulatory core measures
  • Leads quality improvement initiatives and action plans.
  • Ensures adherence to Joint Commission, CMS, CDPH, and other regulatory standards.
  • Investigates patient complaints and clinical incidents.
  • Monitors documentation quality and compliance.
  • Directly supervises Nurse Managers and/or Clinical Coordinators.
  • Ensures appropriate staffing plans aligned with census and acuity.
  • Oversees hiring, coaching, performance management, and corrective action.
  • Develops succession planning strategies.
  • Promotes shared governance and frontline engagement.
  • Fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, and professional growth.
  • Develops and manages departmental budgets.
  • Monitors labor productivity, overtime, premium pay, and agency utilization.
  • Analyzes FTE management and cost containment strategies.
  • Participates in capital equipment planning and resource allocation.
  • Ensures financial performance aligns with organizational targets.
  • Aligns unit goals with hospital strategic priorities.
  • Participates in service line growth initiatives.
  • Leads regulatory survey readiness efforts.
  • Ensures compliance with union agreements (if applicable).
  • Maintains readiness for accreditation inspections.
  • Oversees patient placement and level-of-care appropriateness.
  • Collaborates with case management, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Drives LOS and throughput optimization initiatives.
