About The Position

The George Washington University Catholic Campus Ministry is hiring a Director of Mission Advancement for the Newman Center to support the advancement of it mission. This position is a combined role with both development and administrative responsibilities. The Director of Mission Advancement is responsible for promoting the mission and vision of the Newman Center at The George Washington University and engaging the community at large, including alumni, staff, faculty, parishes, families, and other stakeholders. This includes maintaining administrative oversight of financial support from donors. Additionally, as Administration Director, responsibilities include overseeing general operations of the Newman Center as they pertain to physical plant, financial accountability, and most non-programmatic activities. Both aspects of the role will include direct program involvement with student leaders who support the development and overall mission of the Newman Center. Note: The time allocation between development/fundraising and administration is approximately 80% fundraising and 20% administration, but may vary depending on organizational needs, special campaigns, or operational priorities.

Requirements

  • Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the teachings of the Catholic Church and its traditions
  • Maintains a personal prayer life
  • Able to develop and implement programming that meets fundraising needs consistent with the mission of the Newman Center
  • Able to find, meet, and follow up with supporters
  • Participate in weekly meetings with the Chaplain, Campus Ministers, and other development team members
  • Reliable, organized, and an effective time manager
  • Maintain discretion in confidential matters
  • Work effectively as a team member; communicate clearly with co-workers and others
  • Personable and knowledgeable about the Newman Center
  • Comfortable using computers, internet, and various application systems
  • Experience in Excel, Word, and mail merge processes
  • Experience in finance software (Parish Soft preferred or similar) or willingness to learn
  • Experience in donor database software (Flocknote Fundit preferred, or similar) or willingness to learn
  • Familiar with social networking tools
  • Project a friendly and welcoming atmosphere; provide warm hospitality to callers and visitors
  • Two years of related administrative experience, or a combination of education, training, and experience
  • Bachelor's degree required

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree/certification in administration, fundraising, or related fields strongly preferred
  • Two years of fundraising experience preferred, or equivalent in practice

Responsibilities

  • Raise awareness and support for the ongoing needs, mission, and vision of the Newman Center
  • Assist the Chaplain in planning the financial vision of the Newman Center
  • Maintain donor database: tracking donations, updating information, etc.
  • Utilize data entry and analysis skills (or willingness to learn)
  • Generate and implement annual communications (hard copy, digital, social media) per development goals (7+ per year)
  • Prepare and distribute personalized donor letters, emails, and other communications using mail merge or similar tools
  • Plan and carry out donor events that support the mission and community of the Newman Center
  • Meet with potential donors to invite them to partner with the Newman Center
  • Follow up with current donors to maintain sustainability and relationships
  • Work with the Finance Committee of GW Catholics on promotion and fundraising
  • Seek opportunities to learn more about best practices in development
  • Work with the accountant to maintain and pay bills
  • Collaborate with accountant and development staff on tracking income and deposits
  • Process cash/check deposits directly with the bank
  • Manage filing systems collaboratively with staff members
  • Serve as first point of contact for vendors and facility repair or maintenance needs
  • Perform other administrative tasks as required
  • Work directly with Chaplain, accountant, staff, interns, and students to support overall Center needs
