About The Position

The Director of Instruction and Assessment provides management and oversight of curriculum development, instructional practices, data systems and professional training across the organization. This role serves as a member of the leadership team, ensuring that all educational programs align with the organization’s mission, values, and compliance requirements while promoting innovation, equity, and evidence-based best practices. The Director is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating curriculum and training initiatives that strengthen staff capacity, improve student learning outcomes, and advance organizational goals. This includes leading curriculum review cycles, coordinating professional development opportunities, and integrating data-driven decision-making into program design and evaluation. The Director of Instruction and Assessment works in close partnership with the Director of Education Services, collaborates closely with school and program leaders, instructional staff, and external partners to ensure that all training and curriculum materials are accessible, culturally responsive, and aligned with current research and regulatory standards. Additionally, the Director manages relevant databases and school systems to ensure accurate data collection, reporting, and analysis that inform continuous improvement efforts. As a member of the leadership team, the Director contributes to long-term strategic planning, policy development, and cross-departmental initiatives to advance a high-quality, inclusive learning environment.

Requirements

  • Masters Degree in education or related field
  • A minimum of 5 years teaching experience in a school or program for deaf and hard of hearing students
  • Experience in curriculum development, instructional leadership, and educational administration
  • Experience developing and leading educators
  • Knowledge of DESE regulations, curriculum frameworks, assessment practices, and special education requirements
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and personal characteristics for working effectively with students, teachers, other professionals and parents
  • Experience using data systems to support assessment, curriculum, and continuous improvement
  • Competency in American Sign Language and demonstrated knowledge of Deaf Culture
  • Strong written English skills

Responsibilities

  • Communicates a clear vision of high achievement and continuous quality improvement consistent with the mission and philosophy of TLC.
  • Participates on the leadership team and contributes to the long term strategic planning of the school.
  • Ensure the quality and implementation of the curriculum frameworks in all departments.
  • In collaboration with the school principals, establish mentoring and coaching programs as needed.
  • Responsible for staff professional development programs and offerings, including all required Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Training (DESE), and all annual training required by accrediting bodies.
  • Ensure that the professional development plans are aligned with, and in support of, TLC’s Strategic Plan and the School Improvement Plan, and center student outcomes and meaningful progress toward goals.
  • In collaboration with the Administrative Team, ensure effective curriculum budget development and management.
  • Ensures effective consistent implementation of the Common Core standards in all education departments.
  • Supports and Supervises Educational Support staff (e.g., Reading Specialists, Mainstream and State Testing Coordinator)
  • Ensures compliance with state mandated testing regulations.
  • In collaboration with other leaders, hire and evaluate education leaders.
  • In collaboration with the Administration Team, ensure ongoing, successful accreditation by accrediting bodies, including, DESE, CEASD, COA & NEASC.
  • Support the Director of Education Services in DESE compliance and reporting.
  • Oversee and maintain accurate, data-driven records within relevant databases and school systems, ensuring integrity, accessibility, and effective use of information to inform curriculum design, training initiatives, and compliance.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Department Supervisor and/or Program Leader.
