About The Position

Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, the Director of Government Relations (DGR) will create a comprehensive government relations strategy to strengthen the University’s position in this critical area. Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the DGR will build upon recent government relations activity, with a key focus on elevating CSUSM’s profile at all levels. They will work closely with the University Advancement (UA) Marketing and Communication Director, the University’s President and senior leadership and serve as a member of the University’s Critical Issues Team. The DGR will partner with and serve in a supervisory role to the Director of Strategic Projects within the Office of the President with support on federal relations activity. The DGR is a high-profile position, working across the entire campus on nearly every major issue area. They will track legislation at local, county, state and federal levels relevant to the University and recommend thoughtful approaches to effect important legislation, budget cycles and policy decisions. This position will serve as an effective leader in building and maintaining trusted, diverse relationships and will implement the CSU’s state and federal advocacy plans with their counterparts at the California State University (CSU) system and other CSU campuses. The DGR will also help lead our advocacy efforts for CSU priorities, and work with UA’s Director of Communications and Marketing to share CSUSM’s transformational impact and position the University into conversations at regional and national levels. Position Summary Director of Government Relations (Administrator II) This is a full-time, exempt position in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP). MPP positions serve at the pleasure of the President. Responsibilities
