About The Position

Reporting to the Chief External Affairs Officer (CEAO), the Director of Director Foundation and Government Relations lead fundraising activities related to government entities, private foundations, and corporate foundations for FPHNYC with the goal of providing sustained support for the priority initiatives of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). The Director of Foundation and Government Relations will expand the Fund’s institutional fundraising capacity, establish and drive performance metrics, strengthen and build relationships with current and prospective funders. Working with the CEAO, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the DOHMH Grants Office and program staff, the Director will manage the process of grant seeking to support DOHMH fundraising priorities as well as track and report progress throughout the year. The Director will supervise Institutional Giving staff and Corporate Relations staff including hiring, mentoring, and coaching new and existing staff, in addition to providing guidance and/or technical assistance to DOHMH staff seeking private and public grant funding.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 8 years progressive experience in fundraising and development with a proven track record of securing significant private and public grants.
  • Effective leadership and managerial capabilities, with political acumen.
  • Strategic thinker, able to organize, manage, and evaluate multiple projects and activities, and resolve complex issues with a calm demeanor.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to translate complex ideas into winning proposals.
  • Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and inspire potential funders, community members, and stakeholders.
  • Highly skilled in proposal development for public and private sector funders.
  • Capable and excited to work and excel in a fast-paced and highly collaborative culture.
  • Exceptional customer service orientation, flexible and responsive.
  • High level of quality control and attention to details skills.
  • Superior knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite includes Excel, Word, Power Point, and Outlook.
  • Lead funder life cycle management.
  • Superior knowledge of fundraising software including Salesforce.
  • Knowledge of internal communications tools such as Teams and SharePoint.

  • Carry out additional duties assigned to support the overall goals, mission, and strategic priorities of the department and organization.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute fundraising plans with clearly defined outcomes, activities, and responsibilities, designed to meet annual and multi-year revenue targets in accordance with FPHNYC’s strategic plan.
  • In collaboration with DOHMH program leadership, develop grant proposals and budgets.
  • Provide DOHMH program leadership strategic preparation for funder meetings and site visits.
  • Identify, cultivate, and steward funding relationships with private foundations, federal, state and local government funders, and corporate foundations.
  • Supervise and develop the Senior Manager of Institutional Giving and Manager of Institutional Giving.
  • Lead the collaboration with FPHNYC finance and program departments to ensure alignment and integration of fundraising efforts with other organizational activities.
  • Manage multiple complex grant applications and other funding solicitations, events, campaigns in various stages of development and cultivation (i.e., early planning, active development, pending with donor and requiring follow-up).
  • Prepare funder briefings, talking points, presentations, and prepare key staff in advance of donor meetings, calls, and site visits.
  • Develop grant budgets in collaboration with DOH program teams and FPHNYC finance and program teams.
  • Develop and implement systems to ensure compliance with the requirements of the DOHMH Central Review Committee (CRC) and all other funders, appropriately documenting funds raised by FPHNY in support of DOHMH initiatives.
  • Carry an assigned portfolio of funders and prospects and memorialize relationship and communication history in Salesforce CRM.
  • Work closely with FPHNYC programs team post-award, including participating in regular meetings with DOHMH colleagues to ensure grant compliance.
  • Serve as an active member of the Director Leadership Team (DLT).
  • Collaborate with Communications Director and DOHMH Communications Office on public-facing news and updates about awarded grants and progress of grants-funded programs.
  • Build, cultivate, and maintain strong relationships with key DOHMH leadership and staff, and corporate/foundation program officers to develop winning proposals.
  • Represent the organization at events, conferences, and meetings to enhance its visibility and expand its network.
  • Lead, manage, and develop the institutional giving team by setting clear performance goals, monitoring progress, and providing constructive feedback to enhance individual and team performance.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that encourages innovation, teamwork, and professional growth.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations, provide ongoing training and feedback, address performance problems in a timely and effective manner.
  • Remain informed of trends and best practices in nonprofit news, grant seeking, and fundraising, providing recommendations and insights to inform the organization's strategies and initiatives.
  • Assist in the preparation of board presentations, donor meetings, grant writing training, and meetings with external audiences related to fundraising.
  • Lead quarterly Development Contract invoicing process and collaborate with FPHNYC Finance Department to submit in a timely fashion.
  • Other organizational duties and responsibilities as assigned by the CEAO and CEO.
