Director of Fleet and Logistics

Complete FenceBatavia, IL
1d$80,000 - $105,000

About The Position

We are not your conventional construction company. Specializing in commercial and residential construction and fencing, we are an ambitious, growth-oriented firm committed to taking on complex projects that others avoid. With a double-digit growth rate over the last four years, we are on a trajectory to double in size again in the next two. Our dynamic culture, rooted in excellence and strong core values, distinguishes us as an industry leader. We’re looking for a creative, hands-on problem solver to build and lead our Fleet and Logistics function. This role is ideal for an experienced Fleet Manager or Assistant Fleet Director who has supported fleets of 200+ assets with a minimum fleet value of $2M, but we also encourage entrepreneurial supply chain leaders and mechanically-minded operators with strong logistical instincts to apply. This is a leadership role with real ownership: we influence decisions tied to $2 - $4M/year in equipment rentals and roughly $2M/year in freight movement nationwide. The Director of Fleet and Logistics will develop a scalable fleet strategy, improve asset uptime, reduce total cost of ownership, strengthen compliance and safety, and help us make smart decisions, like whether an in-house semi/tractor capability makes financial and operational sense.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in fleet, maintenance, logistics, or asset management, with at least 2+ years leading people and/or vendors.
  • Experience managing a fleet program with meaningful scale and complexity (preferred: 200+ assets or comparable multi-state operations).
  • Strong working knowledge of preventive maintenance programs, repair workflows, and vendor management.
  • Demonstrated ability to build accurate reporting and make decisions from cost, utilization, and downtime data.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets and negotiate vendor agreements.
  • Experience managing freight/deliveries, carriers, or 3PL/broker relationships (preferred).
  • Familiarity with compliance requirements related to vehicles/equipment (DOT knowledge preferred).
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort navigating conflict and accountability.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; additional technical training or degree preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Fleet Uptime & Readiness Improve vehicle/equipment availability by building a disciplined preventive maintenance and inspection program.
  • Reduce unplanned downtime through tighter scheduling, faster triage, and vendor/mechanic performance management.
  • Establish “ready-to-roll” standards for trucks, trailers, and rolling assets (safety, branding, tools, condition).
  • Total Cost of Ownership & Budget Management Own fleet budgets and deliver predictable monthly reporting across maintenance, fuel, tires/parts, rentals, and outside repair.
  • Identify and execute cost-reduction opportunities without sacrificing safety or uptime (standardization, utilization, procurement).
  • Build lifecycle replacement planning and capital forecasting aligned to operational needs and growth.
  • Freight & Delivery Performance (Nationwide) Improve on-time delivery performance for materials, tools, and equipment to job sites across the country.
  • Own carrier/broker strategy: selection, negotiated rates, service level expectations, and performance scorecards.
  • Evaluate “make vs buy” transport capacity decisions (in-house tractor/driver vs brokered vs rentals) and present clear business cases.
  • Systems, Reporting & Operational Visibility Implement/optimize fleet and logistics tracking systems (maintenance tracking, fuel programs, etc.).
  • Deliver accurate dashboards and decision-ready reporting: utilization, downtime, cost per mile/hour, freight cost per job, vendor performance.
  • Build repeatable SOPs so fleet and logistics performance scales with growth.
  • Compliance, Safety & Risk Reduction Maintain fleet compliance across multi-state operations (registrations, inspections, insurance coordination, documentation).
  • Support incident response and claims documentation; drive corrective actions and warranty/vendor claim recovery.
  • Reduce preventable incidents and improve shop/yard safety practices.
  • Team Leadership & Vendor Management Lead, manage, and hold accountable internal fleet/logistics teammates and external partners.
  • Establish clear expectations, training, and accountability rhythms for mechanics, service partners, carriers, and support roles.
  • Build a high-performing culture: urgency, ownership, and continuous improvement.

Benefits

  • Healthcare Coverage: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans.
  • Retirement Plans: 401(k) with company match.
  • Paid Time Off: PTO including vacation, sick days, and company holidays.
  • Employer Funded Life Insurance
