Position Summary The Director of Field Engineering is responsible for leading all field-based engineering activities supporting the execution of natural gas–powered microgrid projects across commercial, industrial, and mission critical facilities. This role bridges engineering design and field construction, ensuring safe, compliant, high-quality deployment of generation assets that meet customer performance guarantees. This leader drives technical excellence, standardization, constructability optimization, commissioning readiness, and real-time field problem resolution across multiple concurrent EPC projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Power Engineering (Preferred) or relevant experience
  • 10+ years of experience in power generation, distributed energy, EPC construction, or oil field electrical systems
  • 5+ years leading field engineering or technical construction teams.
  • Strong experience with:
  • Natural gas reciprocating engines
  • Microgrids or distributed generation systems
  • Medium-voltage systems (480V–35kV)
  • Paralleling switchgear and protection schemes
  • Deep knowledge of NEC and power system commissioning.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent computer proficiency in Microsoft programs such as, but not limited to, Excel, Word, Outlook, and other database related programs.
  • Some Field Travel required
  • Must be physically capable of wearing protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to fall protection equipment, hardhat, safety shoes, safety glasses etc.
  • Must be open to training, direction, and constant learning and improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Field Engineering Leadership
  • Lead and develop a team of Field Engineers, Commissioning Engineers, and Technical Specialists.
  • Serve as the senior technical authority for on-site engineering issues.
  • Standardize field engineering practices across all microgrid deployments.
  • Partner with Engineering, Construction, and Operations to improve constructability and repeatability.
  • Project Execution Support
  • Ensure field execution aligns with issued-for-construction (IFC) drawings and technical specifications.
  • Oversee site engineering activities including: Generator installation (natural gas reciprocating engines), Paralleling switchgear integration, Medium-voltage interconnection, Protection & controls coordination & Fuel gas system integration.
  • Drive rapid resolution of RFIs, change orders, and technical conflicts.
  • Support commissioning and performance validation efforts.
  • Technical Oversight
  • Review and approve field modifications.
  • Support root cause analysis of field failures or commissioning issues.
  • Validate compliance with:
  • NEC, NFPA 70/110
  • Local utility interconnection requirements
  • Air permit and emissions standards
  • Quality & Safety
  • Champion safety-first engineering practices.
  • Ensure field engineering processes support zero-incident job sites.
  • Lead technical QA/QC inspections.
  • Implement lessons-learned programs to reduce rework.
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Develop scalable engineering standards for multi-unit microgrid sites.
  • Drive modularization and repeatable site layout optimization.
  • Improve installation efficiency and commissioning timelines.
  • Implement digital tools for field documentation and issue tracking.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with: Design Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management, O&M / Asset Management & Sales Engineering (for constructability input)
  • Provide technical insight during project pursuit and proposal phases.
