About The Position

The Director of Facilities and Campus Improvement supports the mission of the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science (ASMS) by ensuring that campus facilities are safe, functional, and well-maintained for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This role oversees daily maintenance operations, campus infrastructure, grounds, and building systems while leading a skilled maintenance team. The Director manages contractors, vendors, and regulatory compliance, and leads long-term planning for campus infrastructure and capital improvement projects. The ideal candidate is a seasoned facilities leader who thrives in an academic environment and exemplifies operational excellence. Classification: Exempt, full-time, 12-month, and salaried.

Requirements

  • Proven leadership experience managing a diverse maintenance team.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of building systems, mechanical equipment, and preventive maintenance practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and campus-wide initiatives.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to respond effectively to emergencies and adapt to the dynamic needs of a residential academic environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR).
  • Must be able to work a day shift on-site, with flexibility to work evenings, nights, weekends, and an on-call rotation to meet the demands of a 24/7 campus environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform routine maintenance and inspection duties, including walking, standing, climbing, bending, and operating tools and equipment across the campus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day leadership for the ASMS Maintenance Department.
  • Prioritize and assign work orders, ensuring timely, high-quality service.
  • Establish annual goals, workflows, and operational standards that align with ASMS’s mission and academic calendar.
  • Promote a culture of professionalism, safety, teamwork, and exceptional service to the ASMS campus.
  • Oversee routine and preventive maintenance for all ASMS academic buildings, residence halls, laboratories, dining facilities, and campus equipment.
  • Manage and ensure optimal performance of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and building automation systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, logs, inventories, warranties, and service schedules.
  • Contributes to long-term campus planning, infrastructure assessments, and capital improvement initiatives.
  • Manage renovation, repair, and construction projects, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and academic operations.
  • Review architectural plans, engineering designs, and project specifications; oversee contractors, inspectors, and external partners.
  • Track project schedules, budgets, and compliance requirements.
  • Assist with facilities budget, including staffing, equipment, repairs, utilities, and contracted services.
  • Procure materials, equipment, and vendor services in a cost-effective and timely manner.
  • Maintain service contracts and evaluate vendor performance to ensure high-quality results.
  • Monitor utility usage and implement strategies to improve energy efficiency across campus.
  • Recommend and manage upgrades that support sustainability, cost savings, and equipment longevity.
  • Incorporate environmentally responsible practices in maintenance operations and purchasing.
  • Support campus leadership in crisis planning and recovery efforts.
  • Serve as contact for facility-related emergencies, including after-hours calls.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the VP/ASMS President.
  • Serves on ASMS committees as assigned.
