About The Position

Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer and Communications Officer, the Director of Development will play a pivotal role in the team’s overall fundraising performance, strengthening donor relationships, and helping to build internal development systems to support long-term organizational growth. This role will support individual giving strategies, lead on grant proposal execution, and help expand Codman’s philanthropic footprint.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of seven years related experience with demonstrated success in individual giving and major gifts
  • Proven track record developing government grants submissions and extensive understanding of best practices within federal and state grants/contracts and administration.
  • Proven ability to cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors, including experience securing gifts of $25K or more.
  • Experience managing and developing small teams.
  • Familiarity with fundraising systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • A strong passion for the health center’s mission is essential
  • Must be able to stand or sit for prolonged periods
  • Must be able to lift 10-25 pounds and load onto shelves.
  • Visual acuity sufficient for frequent reading and computer use.

Responsibilities

  • Fundraising and Donor Engagement Responsible for grant proposals, including the development of a robust grants calendar; lead the coordination, implementation, and execution of grant proposal (federal/state/local, foundation, and corporate) submissions aligned with the mission of CSHC.
  • Oversee grant reporting, submissions, and stewardship of existing, lapsed, and new institutions.
  • Personally manage and lead a portfolio of major institutional gift prospects and donors, owning the full major gifts lifecycle—including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Research new public grants/funding opportunities, assess fit with health center program/goals/mission, and lead decision-making process whether to apply or not.
  • Stay current on state/federal/local government policy changes, budgets, laws/legislation, and other trends to anticipate upcoming funding programs.
  • Partner with the team to identify critical key indicators, best measurement practices and the preparation of ongoing progress reports.
  • Supervises and oversees work performed by direct report(s) within the Development Department.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal stakeholders including programmatic, clinical, executive, finance, data, and administration subject matter experts.
  • Work with finance/project managers, and staff to identify and resolve budget and compliance issues.
  • Work with assigned project champions to meet funder expectations.
  • Collaborate with programmatic, clinical, and finance staff to prepare and submit budget amendments/modifications, as allowed by the funder and in accordance with funder specifications.
  • Ensures that grants are expended in accordance with their terms and that all expenses, financial reports, invoices, and other financial elements are submitted to funders on time.
  • Collaborate with Communications/Marketing team to execute a digital fundraising/development strategy.
  • Work productively with staff champions to collect information and data for proposals and reports.
  • Team Management and Leadership Oversight for accurate donor records and reporting within CRM, ensuring data integrity and prioritizing strong record keeping
  • Oversee the integrity and timeliness of applications, processing award letters, letters of support, acknowledgement letters, contracts, budgets, and other documents.
  • Set clear goals, accountability frameworks, and performance metrics.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performing, and mission-driven team culture
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, and clear performance expectations to build team capacity and support professional growth.
  • Represent the organization at site visits, public events, and other venues as necessary.
  • Grants Compliance Complete, submit, and track the submission of necessary regulatory documents (e.g. UDS, FTCA, SAM) in a timely manner.
  • Assist with grant-related audits, federal/state/local government site visits (e.g. HRSA OSV), including the preparation of documents and follow-up as needed.
  • Proactively monitors new changes in grant-related regulatory guidance, law, and other requirements (e.g. HRSA Compliance Manual, PINs, PALs, etc.)
  • Assists with other advocacy-related health center submissions, such as submitting public comments.
  • Maintain professional and timely communication with government assigned points of contact (e.g., HRSA project officers, financial officers, etc).
  • Fundraiser Events/Campaigns Assist with the organization, planning, and promotion of Health Center fundraising events.
  • In collaboration with the Communications team, participate in the planning and execution of other initiatives including annual reports, marketing collateral, and fundraising campaigns, e.g., capital campaigns, in-kind, Giving Tuesday, etc
