About The Position

Seeking a Director of Development to join our Buffalo Area Services Team The Region Director of Development will be a key member of the leadership team working in close partnership with Salvation Army officers, team lead peers, the Region Development Committees and Advisory Board members. Supervised by the Divisional Director of Shared Ministries and the Director of County Operations, he/she will provide leadership for day-to-day operations and management of the Region development department, special projects and fundraising programs. This position will build and develop effective working relationships between the development team and other departments within the organization. Working with the Director of Advancement, the Region Director of Development will manage a portfolio of top prospects and major donors while developing long-term productive relationships to maximize support for The Salvation Army.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree with relevant advanced training or degree desired; Master’s Degree and CFRE designation preferred.
  • Ability to lead a team and proven experience in staff management of similar sized teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to set and achieve or exceed goals and meet deadlines.
  • A high level of comfort with direct donor interaction, including discussions of personal and family finances and asking for money is a must.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a complex environment, managing multiple projects and conflicting priorities.
  • Strong decision-maker with skillful approach that evaluates options, resources and outcomes in light of the strategic plan of the Division.
  • A communications and management style that exhibits the principles and values of The Army.
  • Effective interpersonal, written and oral communications skills.
  • Advanced understanding of resource development and communications systems and programs and the professional knowledge to achieve department objectives.

  • A proficiency in Word and Excel, as well as experience with donor tracking and/or database software is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license that meets The Salvation Army insurance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • In conjunction with the Director of Advancement, develop fundraising budgets and campaign plans for the fiscal year and ensure budgeted income goals are met.
  • Monitor progress toward achieving financial goals.
  • Engage directly in cultivation and solicitation activities to develop a set of donor relationships that he or she manages on an on-going basis resulting in fundraising for the ministry for your specific Region.
  • Understand overall business strategies and campaign specific direct marketing objectives for your specific Region.
  • Design and launch a targeted recruitment campaign of professional associations to support Christmas campaigns, modeled on the Realtor to Ring day.
  • In conjunction with the Corps Officers, serve as the staff leader for the Region Advisory Boards and Development Committees.
  • Assist with the development of Advisory Boards throughout the Region.
  • Participate in appropriate professional associations.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned including Divisional development initiatives.
  • In coordination with the Donor Relations Director, develop and nurture a strong pipeline of roughly 25 prospects and/or major donors, managing them in such a way to help meet current needs and future goals for the Region.
  • Monitor all reports for accuracy and trends related to direct mail.
  • Present significant information, recommendations for increased efficiency, improvements, revenue generation to appropriate staff and board members for the Region.
  • Evaluate, recommend and implement a proactive strategic stewardship process for all donors from point of entry for the Region.
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan of action with objectives, timelines and evaluation plans for the direct mail and annual fund programs that includes identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of constituents for the Region.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Advancement, provide recommendations and oversight to any necessary conversions to the donor database.
