About The Position

The Director of Development will serve as the inaugural development officer for the New York Proton Center and the NYPC Foundation (collectively,” NYPC”). This role is pivotal in building NYPC’s development operations from the ground up, developing and executing comprehensive fundraising strategies—including grants, major gifts, events, and annual giving—to secure sustainable funding and foster lasting donor and partner relationships. As the first hire in this capacity, the Director of Development will play a key role in shaping NYPC's philanthropy and development plan, driving mission-aligned growth, and establishing a culture of giving to support innovative cancer treatment, patient outcomes, research and education and developing fundraising strategies (grants, major gifts, events, annual giving) to secure funds and build donor/partner relationships in furthering NYPC’s mission. The person in this role will be responsible for the Foundation’s Board of Directors engagement, cultivating relationships with individual donors, identifying and seeking funds from grantmaking foundations, managing fundraising campaigns, and organizing donor events.   The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic, mission-driven leader with an entrepreneurial mindset, who excels at building programs from inception, forging meaningful connections and driving philanthropic impact.  Prior experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required with 5 to 10+ years of fundraising or business development experience, with a proven track record of meeting financial targets, preferably in a healthcare organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Superior presentation skills and experience in networking and relationship building.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, and experience using donor management and wealth screening platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment, with strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a passion for mission-driven work in oncology or patient care.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with grateful patient programs, major gifts, or launching development initiatives in emerging organizations is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Foundation, and development aspects of NYPC, including all philanthropic gifts.
  • Research, identify, qualify and prioritize prospective individual donors, corporations and foundations to build a robust development pipeline.
  • Develop and execute an annual Grateful Patient giving campaign, leveraging patient stories and outcomes to inspire contributions.
  • Develop a comprehensive development strategy and an annual development calendar including donor solicitations, grant applications, events, and stewardship activities, with a focus on scalable growth for a nascent program.
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts, planned giving, and multi-year commitments in alignment with revenue targets.
  • Collaborate with NYPC leadership, board members, and clinical staff to identify new fundraising opportunities, including partnerships with healthcare philanthropies and aligned organizations.
  • Draft compelling grant proposals, donor acknowledgments, impact reports and personalized communications to engage and retain supporters.
  • Develop and implement tailored stewardship plans to ensure donors feel valued and informed about the impact of their contributions.
  • Lead the planning and execution of donor cultivation events including tours of the New York Proton Center, cocktail receptions, grateful patient gatherings, and virtual webinars. Coordinate logistics, sponsorship outreach, and post-event follow-up with attendees to convert interest into commitments.
  • Partner with NYPC’s Marketing & Communications team to produce high-impact materials, including annual reports, stewardship materials, direct marketing appeals, and digital campaigns.
  • Write persuasive gift solicitations, grant applications, and campaign narratives that highlight the transformative power of proton therapy.
  • Act as primary liaison to the Foundation’s Board of Directors, cultivating board engagement, facilitating meetings, and leveraging board networks for fundraising.
  • Establish and maintain accurate donor records on a donor management platform (e.g., Salesforce), implementing best practices for data integrity and wealth screening.
  • Track and report on program KPIs for revenue, donor participation, retention, and provide regular reports to Foundation board and leadership.
  • Ensure timely gift acknowledgments and compliance with all fundraising regulations and ethical standards.
  • Comply with all NYPC policies related to Privacy Rules established under the Health Information Privacy and Portability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
  • Perform other job-related duties, as assigned, with flexibility to adapt in a startup-like environment.
