About The Position

Saints Philip and James Church and University Parish is seeking a Director of Development and Stewardship. This individual will lead SS. Philip and James’ fundraising activities for both the campus ministry and the parish as a whole. The Director will work under the direct supervision of the Chaplain and Director of the Catholic Community at Hopkins and, ultimately, the Pastor of SS. Philip and James. The Director of Development and Stewardship will advance the mission, vision, and strategic plans of SS. Philip and James University Parish in collaboration with the Dominican friars and other staff, working to spread the Gospel and promote the salvation of souls in Baltimore and at Johns Hopkins University. The Director works most closely with the Chaplain to manage donor relationships and implement comprehensive annual fundraising efforts specifically for the Catholic Community at Hopkins. This individual is responsible for broad and creative fundraising initiatives and relationship-building strategies. The selected candidate will develop and execute a comprehensive major gift strategy and oversee the tracking, acknowledgment, and reporting of all gifts. Additionally, the Director of Development and Stewardship will play a key role in the planning, budgeting, and oversight of any future capital projects undertaken by the parish and campus ministry.

Requirements

  • Must be a practicing Catholic in good standing who upholds all Church teachings, loves Christ and His Church, is committed to the mission of the Dominican friars and SS. Philip and James, and views development work as part of the parish’s mission to evangelize Johns Hopkins University in the saving name of Jesus Christ.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, or an equivalent combination of experience, training, and education; master’s degree preferred.
  • Proven track record of securing significant major and principal gifts.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic planning, budgeting, research, board development, donor relations, and staff management.
  • Exemplary interpersonal, public speaking, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ethic of accountability in the workplace, with a high level of initiative and sound judgment.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to quickly learn and utilize donor databases and communications platforms (e.g., Bloomerang, MailChimp).

Responsibilities

  • Identify and cultivate relationships with potential major donors.
  • Personally engage with and meet top donors and prospects.
  • Prepare donor research and prospecting materials to support the Chaplain and Pastor in major gift conversations.
  • Assist the University Parish in preparing for future capital projects.
  • Develop and maintain an annual development calendar with clear benchmarks and timelines.
  • Plan and execute major annual initiatives, including a Giving Tuesday campaign, a year-end appeal, a spring appeal, and other campaigns as appropriate.
  • Track progress toward annual fundraising goals and provide regular reports.
  • Support CCH’s monthly donor society, major gift strategy, and grant applications.
  • Engage alumni, parents, parishioners, and other benefactors through monthly cultivation efforts and stewardship communications.
  • Oversee registrations, communications, and post-event follow-up for cultivation initiatives (in collaboration with Johns Hopkins or hosted by the campus ministry/parish).
  • Ensure timely and personalized acknowledgment of all gifts.
  • Pray for the benefactors of CCH and SSPJ and encourage staff to do the same.
  • Support the Pastor and parish staff in growing and promoting parish giving through offertory appeals, bequests, and other initiatives.
  • Oversee donor records and gift tracking while maintaining database integrity and reporting accuracy.
  • Generate financial and donor engagement reports.
  • Manage the technical backend of online giving platforms and digital campaigns.
  • Coordinate with the parish bookkeeper and Office Manager to ensure reconciliation and compliance with archdiocesan policies.
  • Create development materials (often using Canva), including appeal graphics, newsletters, and event collateral.
  • Draft appeal letters, follow-up communications, annual reports, and impact updates that clearly communicate the mission and impact of CCH.
  • Assist with maintaining the donor-facing sections of the CCH website and social media presence.
