About The Position

The Director of Contemporary Worship Ministry plays a pivotal role in shaping, managing, and coordinating all aspects of the Contemporary Worship Service at Church of the Good Shepherd. This includes musical direction, creative service design, and integration of multi-sensory elements (music, visuals, drama, and media production). The Director’s work with the Senior Pastor, Design Team, and volunteer teams is crucial to ensure services align with the church’s mission, vision, and core values.

  • A bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent experience is preferred, along with 3–5 years of experience leading contemporary worship.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a strong Christian faith and a commitment to teaching others about Jesus Christ.
  • Understand the purpose and goals of the Contemporary Service to ensure alignment with the church's mission and vision.
  • Lead the Design Team meetings to establish weekly themes and creative elements for worship.
  • Plan and coordinate all aspects of the Contemporary Worship Service, including music, visuals, and drama.
  • Create the order of worship based on the weekly theme.
  • Select music (celebration and feature numbers) in consultation with the Pastor and Design Team.
  • Write the scripts for the Contemporary Service and supervise weekly script production, ensuring distribution by Thursday.
  • Possess strong communication, writing, and organizational skills to craft and promote the theme of each service (calls to worship, prayers, sending forth, etc.).
  • Coordinate with the Media Director to approve and recommend visuals (stills, videos, and other media) that align with the weekly theme.
  • Locate, select, and distribute dramas or other creative elements as needed.
  • Recruit, train, and coach volunteer musicians, artists, and drama team members.
  • Oversee volunteers involved in music, visuals, and stage design.
  • Set schedules for the Drama Team, Visual Team, and Writers.
  • Ensure timely communication between musicians, sound, lighting, and media teams.
  • Schedule replacements and ensure all service roles are covered when team members are unavailable.
  • Direct musical activities during rehearsals and worship services.
  • Create and distribute service scripts, lyric sheets, and worship materials on time.
  • Oversee preparations for seasonal and special services (e.g., Christmas, Easter, Communion Sundays).
  • Organize and maintain worship resources, music files, and stage areas to ensure seamless operations.
  • Coordinate with support volunteers for logistical and administrative needs.
  • Possess good communication and organizational skills to manage workflow efficiently.
  • Possess a broad range of musical ability and knowledge (strong keyboard skills preferred).
  • Have solid knowledge of contemporary worship forms, drama, and visual arts.
  • Think conceptually and creatively to develop meaningful worship experiences.
  • Work well in stressful situations and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Engage in ongoing education and research to enhance the quality and creativity of worship.
  • Access, review, and employ a variety of resources—including online tools—to improve the service.
  • Use continuing educational opportunities to learn and develop new forms in worship.

Benefits

  • Salary of $45,000 with no benefits, except for a $3,600 stipend to buy health insurance
