About The Position

Harbor Hospice is headquartered in Muskegon, MI along the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline and on Muskegon Lake. Our team members embrace our mission of providing end of life care with empathy, expertise and compassion to our patients and family members. The Director of Clinical Services is responsible for the oversight and provision of the organization’s clinical services, including the employment of qualified Hospice and Palliative Care personnel. The Director of Clinical Services establishes, implements, and evaluates the agency’s care, treatment, and services to comply with federal and state regulations; maintains quality standards, Joint Commission accreditation, and promotes the organization’s philosophy of care. The Director develops strategies for growth and program enhancements in support of the organization’s strategic plan. He/she considers the organization’s mission and the organization’s business needs in all decision making. Serves as a member of the Senior Leadership team with organizational accountability and leadership for overall strategy, planning and performance in collaboration with President & CEO and Board of Directors.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s degree with 5-10 years related experience in clinical leadership and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current state of Michigan Registered Nurse License.
  • Maintains a valid Michigan driver’s license and has the availability of a reliable, licensed and insured vehicle for use on the job, vehicle must be insured in accordance with the State of Michigan.

  • Certification in hospice and palliative care preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge and expertise to guide and develop department manager(s) and team in their roles and provide constructive feedback as needed.
  • Authorizes hiring and termination requests in collaboration with the Human Resource Manager, in the absence of the President & CEO.
  • Set organizational goals and objectives based on a strategic planning process and business development. Sets priorities and deadlines, implementing strategy through strong communication that includes a plan of action, clear expectations and accountability.
  • Makes critical decisions – identifies issues and resolves time sensitive challenges that arise. Demonstrates creativity and innovation to find new solutions to complex issues.
  • Manage department budgets and work with managers to ensure funds are used appropriately and that budgets stay on track. Provide analysis of departmental budget variations. Forward invoices, contracts, and receipts to the accounting department as required.
  • Works to maximize the team’s efficiency, productivity and performance. Utilizes productivity tools, streamlines workflows, monitors education and performance.
  • Possesses strong technical computer skills related to position (EHR, etc.).
  • Demonstrates initiative in seeking learning opportunities to increase knowledge and expertise in current trends and topics in hospice and palliative care relevant to role.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of patient and employee information at all times, both at work and off duty, and after the termination of employment according to the agency’s Notice of Privacy Practices and HIPAA regulations.
  • Is knowledgeable and functional in computer applications including database, word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail system as required for the execution of the job.
  • Maintains full responsibility over the day to day functions of the clinical programs in homecare, facility based, and hospice residence settings; implements policies, evaluates services, defines systems, monitors patient care and staffing costs while ensuring efficiencies do not negatively affect quality.
  • Responsible for the Infection prevention and control program.
  • Provides leadership in the development of the organization’s goals and monitors related agency metrics.
  • Translates the organization’s strategic plan into specific individual and group behavioral expectations and objectives through improved work methods, processes, and procedures.
  • Plans, organizes and coordinates the Hospice interdisciplinary team to assure the appropriate utilization of the services of each hospice discipline.
  • Oversees staff schedules to assure the appropriate level of staffing to meet patient and family needs. Insures ongoing staffing coverage for Administrator on Call rotations.
  • Provides clinical supervision to patient care staff to assure quality standards are met in compliance with Medicare, the Joint Commission, and State regulations and standards.
  • Implements standards for electronic medical records to meet agency, Federal, State and Joint Commission standards.
  • Monitors and interprets operational indicators to detect census changes as well as increase or decreases in volume which could affect staffing levels, revenue, or expenses.
  • Participates in the development of agency budget and provides oversight of responsible areas.
  • Provides staff development and education and assists program staff to understand their work in relation to the total program of the organization.
  • Actively promotes and participates in organization-wide performance improvement activities.
  • Prepares and analyzes information, statistics, reports and records for purposes of evaluation and reporting on organization activities and outcomes.
  • Participates in internal and external meetings to inform board, staff, volunteers and stakeholders about the mission, services and programs of the organization.
  • Maintains a climate that attracts, retains, and motivates a diverse and competent staff and volunteer group.
  • Meets with staff individually and in groups to communicate agency expectations for performance and outcomes as well as validate the contribution of employees to the overall success of the organization.
  • Develops ongoing positive and professional relationships with contracted providers and other related parties.
  • Shares after-hours, weekend, and holiday administrative on-call responsibilities for the agency.
