About The Position

The Director of Carrier Operations is a senior logistics professional responsible for building, managing, and optimizing the network of carriers and third-party logistics (3PL) providers to ensure consistent, cost-effective, and reliable transportation for full truckload (FTL) freight. They are crucial for bridging the gap between sales demands and available trucking resources.

Requirements

  • Strategic Leadership: Proven ability to build a team, develop processes, and lead in a high-performance, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong Negotiation Skills: Ability to negotiate rates and SLA (Service Level Agreements) to optimize costs.
  • Analytical Mindset: Proficiency in leveraging Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and analytics tools to track metrics.
  • Relationship Building: Exceptional networking skills to foster trust with internal teams (sales, operations) and external partners (carriers).
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to handle complex, high-stakes logistical issues and mitigate risk.
  • Experience: 5-10+ years of experience in trucking, logistics, or transportation management, with significant experience in freight brokerage.
  • Knowledge: Deep understanding of truckload (TL) brokerage operations, market trends, and pricing strategies.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, or Business is often preferred.
  • Industry Expertise: Familiarity with DOT, FMCSA, and regulatory policies.

Responsibilities

  • Carrier Strategy & Growth: Develop and execute strategies to grow and manage a profitable team. Identify, vet, and onboard new carrier partners to expand available carriers.
  • Carrier Sourcing & Procurement: Leverage existing carrier networks and build new relationships to secure capacity across multiple lanes and regions, particularly in tight market conditions.
  • Rate Negotiation & Pricing: Negotiate spot market and contract rates with carriers to ensure competitive pricing and maximize gross profit and margin.
  • Relationship Management: Act as the primary owner for strategic contract carrier accounts, conducting reviews and fostering long-term partnerships.
  • Operations Oversight: Oversee daily operations, including booking freight, tracking loads, and resolving service failures.
  • Performance Analytics: Use KPIs (e.g., tender acceptance, on-time performance) to measure carrier performance, developing "preferred carrier" programs based on data analytics.
  • Technology & Compliance: Ensure carrier compliance with DOT/FMCSA regulations, safety standards, and insurance requirements.
