About The Position

The Director of Campus Safety is responsible for the development, implementation and management of campus safety, security, and emergency management programs and services, which enhance the public safety of the University Community and its visitors along with the protection of all institutional facilities and property.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public service, management or similar field, plus a minimum of five years management/supervisory experience within a safety, security, or law enforcement environment, preferably at an institution of higher education.
  • Able to demonstrate a record of strong leadership and administration.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Expertise with utilizing safety and security technologies with a strong working knowledge of community policing.
  • Familiarity with integrated video surveillance and automated dispatch systems.
  • Experience with providing oversight of contract security services, non-sworn security operations and event security.
  • Demonstrate a history of relationship-building and collaborative decision making, passion, energy, and initiative for leading a department through strategic change.

  • Possess a collaborative and collegial style with the ability to maintain balance, consistency, and flexibility in decision making.

Responsibilities

  • Direct, manage, and coordinate all functions of the Campus Safety Department.
  • Supervise a team of personnel and ensure high levels of professionalism, visibility, and responsiveness
  • Serve as primary University liaison to local, state, and federal law enforcement, including the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), in matters related to university property, staff, and events.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies and procedures that reflect best practices and comply with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Prepare and manage the Campus Safety Department's annual budget.
  • Oversee daily security operations, including patrols, incident response, campus surveillance systems, and access control.
  • Ensure effective communication and coordination with local law enforcement, fire, and emergency services.
  • Monitor and maintain security-related technology and systems (e.g., cameras, alarm systems, card access, emergency notification system).
  • Responsible for management and supervision of the Parking Enforcement program.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of emergency response and disaster preparedness plans.
  • Develop a system for continuous risk assessment and vulnerability analysis.
  • Analyze intelligence concerning campus safety, providing timely reports to university officials regarding potential and actual safety and security concerns.
  • Coordinate campus-wide emergency drills and training exercises in collaboration with relevant departments and agencies.
  • Act as the lead responder and incident commander for campus emergencies and critical incidents.
  • Promote a culture of safety through awareness campaigns, training sessions, and community engagement.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations, including the Clery Act, Minger Act, Title IX, FERPA, and applicable OSHA standards.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of incidents, crime statistics, and required reports for accurate reporting of crime statistics to the US Department of Education.
  • Prepare and distribute the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report (ASFSR).
  • Oversee or collaborate on programs related to occupational safety, hazardous materials management, fire safety inspections, and building safety.
  • Coordinate with Facilities Management on campus safety hazards and risk mitigation.
