About The Position

The Business Intelligence Director provides strategic and operational leadership for the organization's analytics, reporting, and data enablement functions. This role is responsible for modernizing and optimizing how the organization leverages data - streamlining data usage, improving analytics tools, strengthening data governance, and expanding self-service reporting capabilities across clinical, operational, and financial domains. The director ensures BI initiatives are aligned with market priorities, organizational strategy, and performance goals, delivering insights that support improved patient care, operational efficiency, and financial stewardship. The Director leads and develops a multi-disciplinary business intelligence team, overseeing project prioritization, analytic solution delivery, and continuous improvement. The role collaborates closely with senior executives, clinical leadership, operational leaders, and technical partners to design and implement high impact analytics using data from systems such as Epic, Strata, and Workday. Acting as a trusted consultant and thought leader, the director drives data maturity, promotes evidence-based decision making, and ensures analytics solutions are reliable, accessible, and governed. Through a combination of strategic vision, technical expertise, and collaborative leadership, the Business Intelligence Director advances the organization's analytical capabilities and builds a scalable foundation for enterprise-wide data excellence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Health Administration, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Seven (7) + years of progressive experience in business intelligence, analytics, or a related technical field, preferably within a healthcare provider or health system.
  • Demonstrated leadership of BI/analytics teams, including hiring, performance management, coaching, and developing multi-disciplinary talent.
  • Proven success leading performance driven analytics (clinical, operational, and / or financial) and converting insights into measurable organizational improvements.
  • Experience managing large, complex, concurrent initiatives with competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Strategic experience advancing data maturity, including data governance, data quality frameworks, standardized KPIs, and reusable enterprise analytics assets.
  • Hands on experience with modern BI tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Qlik), including semantic modeling and data visualization best practices.
  • Experience querying and working with relational databases using SQL, and familiarity with enterprise data warehousing, data modeling, and ETL/ELT processes.
  • Experience enabling and scaling self-service analytics, including developing governed datasets, documentation, and training for business users.
  • Experience working with Epic data structures, such as Clarity, Caboodle, and relevant Epic subject areas (clinical, operational, revenue cycle).
  • Understanding of common Epic data models, such as encounters, orders, documentation, patient movement, throughput, revenue cycle, scheduling, and clinical quality measures.
  • Experience integrating or using Workday data for HR, staffing, payroll, time tracking, or financial analytics, including understanding Workday data objects and reporting structures.
  • Knowledge of key healthcare datasets, including EHR data, claims (professional & facility), utilization data, cost data, and population health metrics.
  • Understanding of healthcare regulatory and quality reporting, such as CMS programs, Joint Commission, HEDIS, readmissions, LOS, throughput, risk adjustment, and value-based care.
  • Experience collaborating closely with IT/data engineering, particularly around data architecture, data pipelines, data validation, and platform management.
  • Strong understanding of privacy and compliance requirements, including HIPAA, PHI handling, and secure analytics practices.
  • Ability to teach complex analytical concepts to clinical, administrative, and executive audiences.
  • Strong influence and negotiation skills with senior leadership, clinical leadership, and cross-functional teams.
  • Experience presenting insights and recommendations to executives, including crafting compelling data stories.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Business Intelligence (BI) team: Direct day to day activities, balance workload, and assign projects aligned to market and organizational strategic and operational goals.
  • Own enterprise data infrastructure: Oversee data definitions, standards, master and reference data, and reporting across platforms; ensure data is accurate, timely, and fit for purpose.
  • Champion data governance: Establish and mature governance policies, data quality controls, metadata practices, and standardized KPIs to build trust in data across clinical, operational, and financial domains.
  • Advance analytics strategy and maturity: Modernize tools, processes, and self-service capabilities; scale governed semantic models and reusable assets that enable data driven decision making.
  • Deliver high impact analytics: Guide market wide and multi entity initiatives; translate business questions into analytical approaches and actionable recommendations with measurable outcomes.
  • Partner cross functionally: Collaborate with executives and leaders in clinical operations, finance, quality, IT, and revenue cycle to prioritize, design, and implement analytics that improve performance.
  • Enable self-service and adoption: Develop governed datasets, documentation, and training; raise data literacy and ensure responsible use of analytics across the organization.
  • Mentor and develop talent: Coach team members in analytical methods, data interpretation, and stakeholder engagement; identify skill gaps and drive continuous professional growth.
  • Drive operational excellence: Implement best practices for delivery, reliability, and usability of BI solutions; manage a portfolio of requests and communicate progress, value, and impact.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and data security: Uphold HIPAA and privacy requirements; safeguard PHI/PII across data pipelines, tools, and reports; maintain appropriate access controls, auditability, and secure handling of sensitive data.
  • Collaborate on architecture and integrations: Work with IT/data engineering to design performant data models and pipelines (e.g., EMR/EHR, ERP/HRIS), supporting systems such as Epic, Strata, and Workday where applicable.
  • Communicate with clarity: Present insights and recommendations to senior and clinical leadership using clear narratives, data visualization best practices, and outcome focused storytelling.
  • Perform departmental administration: Contribute to budgeting, vendor/tool evaluations, resourcing, and continuous improvement of BI operating practices.
