About The Position

PURPOSE: The Director of AI Innovation and Technology Compliance leads LSUA’s coordinated approach to artificial intelligence to strengthen academic effectiveness, student experience, and institutional operations while ensuring AI and related technology use aligns with institutional IET policy, security expectations, data stewardship, and emerging state compliance requirements. This position serves as the University’s AI Officer, providing governance, prioritization, oversight, and accountability structures for AI adoption and use. The Director also ensures that technology decisions and practices comply with applicable State of Louisiana requirements and LSU System policies and standards. The Director is responsible for organizing and leading campus collaboration with all departments, establishes governance processes, convenes campus stakeholders, assigns functional ownership to the appropriate units, monitors execution, and reports progress and risk to leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Information Systems, Educational Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in AI applications, instructional technology, data analytics, or a related area in higher education or industry preferred.
  • Ability to respond professionally to inquiries or complaints from university faculty, staff, administration, regulatory agencies, and external stakeholders.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and university employees.
  • Effective presentation skills, including the ability to translate complex AI concepts for diverse audiences.
  • Working knowledge or better of artificial intelligence applications, including machine learning, natural language processing, and AI-powered tools for education and operations.
  • Familiarity with AI ethics, data privacy, security, and compliance considerations in an academic setting.
  • Self-motivated, independent, and capable of driving initiatives with minimal supervision.
  • Flexible, creative, and adaptable to emerging AI trends and university needs.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to foster innovation across multiple departments.

Responsibilities

  • AI Innovation Leadership and Institutional Compliance Lead the development and maintenance of an institutional AI innovation roadmap aligned to LSUA priorities. Identify high-value AI opportunities across academics, student experience, finance, and operations through structured intake and discovery with units. Coordinate pilots and proofs of concept by establishing scope, success measures, governance checkpoints, and functional ownership. Oversee scaling of validated AI solutions into supported operations, including operational readiness, resourcing, and documentation expectations. Promote responsible innovation by creating clear pathways for proposing, testing, approving, and deploying AI capabilities.
  • AI Officer Responsibilities and Governance Serve as LSUA’s designated AI Officer and primary coordinator for AI governance across campus. Establish and maintain an AI intake, review, and approval process for new AI tools and AI-enabled features within existing platforms. Maintain an institutional inventory of authorized AI tools and approved use cases, including risk tiering, required safeguards, and review cycles. Ensure AI use is aligned with institutional requirements for confidentiality, privacy, security, records retention, accessibility, and appropriate human oversight. Coordinate processes for exception requests and risk acceptance when warranted, with clear documentation and leadership approvals as appropriate.
  • Technology Compliance and IET Policy Alignment Coordinate and oversee compliance alignment for AI and related technologies with LSUA IET policies and standards, including acceptable use, data handling, identity and access management, and secure configuration expectations. Partner with IT and information security to ensure AI tool use and AI-enabled workflows apply the right controls for the data involved. Monitor and coordinate responses to compliance gaps such as unauthorized tools, non-compliant data handling, and inconsistent use of approved platforms. Maintain a practical compliance playbook that translates policy expectations into usable guidance and workflows for campus teams.
  • Multidisciplinary AI Committee Leadership Convene and lead a standing AI Innovation and Technology Compliance Committee with multidisciplinary representation. Establish committee charter, cadence, agendas, decision pathways, and documentation standards. Use the committee to set future priorities, evaluate proposals, validate risk mitigations, and align campus communications and expectations regarding AI use. Document committee decisions, approvals, conditions of use, action assignments, and track follow-through.
