About The Position

The Director of Arterial Maintenance is responsible for overseeing highway maintenance and repair operations for approximately 2,000 lane miles of city- and state-owned parkways and expressways and 2,500 acres of adjacent landscaped areas citywide, and for directing a workforce of approximately 225 employees. Responsibilities include managing highway maintenance activities such as guiderail and fencing installation and repair, debris removal, roadway sweeping, attenuator placement and maintenance, snow and ice removal, and the installation and maintenance of traffic and landscape medians. The Director also oversees landscaping operations, including mowing, planting, pest control, tree trimming, shrub pruning, removal of dead trees, and maintenance of landscaped roadway areas. The Director works jointly with the Adopt-A-Highway, State Arterial Maintenance Program, and data management units to coordinate maintenance activities, including volunteer and sponsor maintenance activities, scheduling, and data tracking. The Director also coordinates on a managerial level with City agencies, New York State DOT, community organizations, and internal DOT units to support arterial maintenance operations.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and five years of full-time experience, with a public or private organization, in inspection, maintenance, construction or engineering work related to the work of a large scale highway system; at least 18 months of which must have been in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity or supervising a staff engaged in performing the above type of work; or
  • A valid New York State Professional Engineer's License and 18 months of supervisory, administrative, managerial or executive experience in civil engineering work related to highway construction or maintenance; or
  • A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and nine years of the experience described in "1" above; at least 18 months of supervisory, administrative, managerial or executive experience as described in "1" above; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2" or "3" above and at least 18 months of supervisory, administrative, managerial or executive experience as described in "1" above.
