About The Position

The Director of Alumni Engagement is a key role responsible for strengthening the lifelong connection between UC Law San Francisco and its alumni community. This position offers a unique opportunity for a strategic, relationship-driven professional to shape the alumni engagement strategy of California’s oldest law school, an institution poised for growth and increasing impact. Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer, the Director will design and lead a comprehensive engagement program that fosters meaningful relationships, professional networks, and enduring loyalty among more than 23,000 living alumni. As a public champion of the law school, the Director will help elevate its reputation among alumni and the broader legal community while advancing institutional priorities. With a strong emphasis on strategy, collaboration, and innovation, the Director will partner closely with Advancement, faculty and staff, and school leadership to align alumni engagement with institutional goals. The Director supports fundraising, enhances visibility, and enriches the student experience to ensure the alumni network remains active, engaged, and supportive of the College’s mission.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in law, business, communications, nonprofit management, or related field preferred.
Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive experience in alumni relations, advancement, external affairs, or a closely related field, preferably in higher education or a mission-driven organization.
Demonstrated supervisory experience of 3+ years, with proven ability to lead, mentor, and manage team performance.
Proven ability to develop and lead strategic alumni engagement initiatives that align with institutional goals and advance organizational mission.
Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to engage, motivate, and collaborate with diverse alumni, volunteers, and key stakeholders.
Experience designing, implementing, and evaluating programs and events, with a track record of innovation and growth in alumni engagement.
Knowledge of best practices in alumni relations, volunteer management, event planning, and Advancement.
Data-informed decision-making skills, including the ability to analyze engagement trends and measure program outcomes.
Proficiency with alumni/donor databases (e.g., Raiser's Edge, Salesforce, or similar CRM systems) and comfort with data management, reporting, and integrity standards.
Exceptional communication skills with the ability to represent the institution effectively to alumni and external audiences.
Strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Collaborative mindset with a demonstrated ability to work across departments and with institutional leadership.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute a comprehensive alumni engagement strategy that deepens connections between the law school and its alumni community. Align engagement efforts with the school's mission, institutional priorities, and advancement goals.
Team Leadership & Mentoring: Manage and mentor the alumni relations team to foster a collaborative, results-oriented environment that meets goals and delights alumni while strengthening engagement, encouraging volunteerism, and promoting philanthropic support.
Relationship Building & Community Engagement: Serve as a key representative to the alumni community, fostering a culture of connection, professional engagement, and lifelong affinity. Cultivate meaningful relationships with alumni across industries, class years, and geographic regions.
Program Development, Expansion & Innovation: Lead the creation, enhancement, and management of signature events, professional networks, and engagement experiences that connect alumni both in person and virtually. Build on existing successful programs while designing new initiatives that reflect the distinct strengths, ambitions, and evolving needs of UC Law SF and its alumni community.
Volunteer Leadership & Stewardship: Build and sustain a dynamic alumni leadership network. Partner with alumni volunteers, the Alumni Board, and affinity groups to advance engagement goals and champion the school’s vision.
Data-Informed Strategy & Impact Measurement: Design metrics and use data analytics, alumni feedback, and industry best practices to inform engagement strategies, assess impact, and continuously improve programming.
Cross-Campus Collaboration & Advancement Integration: Work in close partnership with advancement, career services, communications, faculty, and senior leadership to ensure a cohesive approach to alumni relations that supports fundraising, reputation-building, and student success.
Visibility & Brand Advocacy: Act as a champion for the law school’s brand, helping to strengthen its reputation by managing alumni communication channels to showcase alumni achievements, foster pride, and cultivate lifelong advocacy for the institution.
Data Management & Reporting: Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and strategic use of alumni data in partnership with Advancement Services. Maintain up-to-date alumni records and engagement histories, and utilize data to identify opportunities, inform strategy, track outcomes, and support reporting needs.
